THE 2012 Selection for the BC Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame *This the third year, we are now in the process of selecting the ones for 2012 with a combination of boxers, builders, clubs events, women in boxing etc. It is now a matter of days, and it all boils down to the numbers of inductees. It is now down to the number 10 to 16. The event is a significant point in Canadian boxing history "the 1984 Canadian National Junior Boxing championships and the Senior box-offs" the senior portion of the event would finalize the 1984 Olympic team but the Junior portion would provide about half of the team for 1988 Olympics. Persons involved in the selection process: A. Brown, B. Zelley, D. Scott, R. Beaulieu, S. Galloway, S. Wood and T. Boyce. Various folks provided input on the various nominees.
http://nanaimoboxing.blogspot.ca/ *This is a story of Nanaimo boxing from 1963 to 2012, it starts with the beginning of Nanaimo's Newcatle Boxing Club and shows how it had an impact on the formation of the Nanaimo Boxing Club in 1971.:happy:hi::bbb The early story in 2010 takes us back to 1972 and the first boxing card hosted by the Nanaimo Boxing Club. It lists the names of the first Nanaimo boxers to compete in a Nanaimo hosted card.
my brother Raymond used to be neighbors with referee Bert Lowes, I new old Don McDonald, Vernon BC, originally from Field or was it Trail, but back in the day they had some good boxing history... Roy Witts, from Wales originally, and use to manage Terry Lawless is a great coach and boxing man who started Port Kells Boxing Club as well as I used to work with Bruce Eikoff who was a great amature, turned Pro, but apparantly just couldn't overcome "Stage Fright" and dropped out. I met Manny Sobrel quite a few times and while working in the Waste Disposal industry I used to meet and chat with Wilf Greaves who was working as a welder with Vaughn's Disposal, who for a time ran a Recycling Dumping Station down along S.W. Marine Dr in Vancouver/Burnaby! B.C. has a good long link with Boxing forsure!
I don't know, I just remember the two being mentioned at BoxRec a couple of years back they somehow are connected one with the other, Roy Witt is older so maybe he was instrumantal in shaping Lawless or maybe it was they trained a fighter together. I wasn't asking you to correct me, just to see what your answer was. I was asking you to correct me because I don't know the precise account of their relationship, thats all. I still don't, it tis a Forum after all and we both contribute informartion and learn from it too! :good
ONTARIO AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME http://bwzontarioboxing.blogspot.ca/ *A fresh new story of the unknown, takes us to Ontsrio, Canada where they have a rich history of boxing including some top notch achievements in amateur boxing. This s a journey to recognize those that have been a part of the Ontario amateur boxing scen over the decades, In the early years there were the likes of AMMY LUFTSPRING, and as the year 1999 turned in 32000 there was MICHAEL STRANGE. Between Luftspring and Strange, there have been many names, but now is the time for a NEW BEGINNING with the OABHOF, In five days, there is a list of 50 nominees but the nomination process continues until August 31st.:hi::happy
THE SELECT FIFTY: ONTARIO AMATEUR BOXING: Looking through the list of fifty names is a very interesting journey. There are many ways to travel through the list. There are a number of family names that have been considered Baggio, Bland, Doiron, Marsh, MacDonald, Nolan, Rannelli and Summerhayes. Then there are those boxers that were part of the pre-1970 era and the new era from the Seveties and onward that was part of the CABA 0 BOXING CANADA. One of the many names of interest as a boxer was WALTER HENRY. As we travel through the Seventies two names of importance were IAN CLYDE and NICKY FURLANO. But, we also have the likes of JOE SANDULO who was an Olympic boxer in 1948 and a coach of the Beaver Boxing Club in Ottawa. As we trip through the Eighties, some star quality in the ring was provided by those such as LEWIS and O'SULLIVAN, JOHN KALBHENN, the brothers PAGENDAM and many more.:bbb Then comes the Nineties with the likes of MICHAEL STRANGE, BILLY IRWIN and MARC LEDUC. One that has held many titles but has also arranged events and documented some of the history id DOMRNIC FILANE FIGLIOMENI and the beat rocks on. Getting back to those pre-1970 decades, who could forget HORACE "Lefty" GWYNNE, SAMMY LUFTSPRING, EARL WALLS, and GEORGE CHUVALO. But behind every boxer there are coaches and officials with the likes of HANK BOONE, KEN HAMILTON, PETER WYLIE, GEORGE FRASER and DENNIS BRADLEY.
MOVING TOWARDS 2013 *Well two items on the go for 2013: artytime:boohooarty 1. The selection for the 2013 BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME. As at October 22nd. there are 32 nominees with a good mix of boxers and builders including high profile names in Canada such as DERRICK HOYT.:bbb 2. The building process of a CANADIAN AMATEUR BOXING WALL OF FAME :deal *The objective is to have four regions of Canada work on nominations including: THE MARITIMES, QUEBEC, ONTARIO and WESTERN CANADA.:good Good progress is being made, with the strongest show of support being in THE MARITIMES and there are plenty of names to sprinkle into the wall of fame mix such as: RAY DOWNEY, TAYLOR GORDON, CHRIS CLARKE and then the late BOB EDGETT. From the Western Canada, there are also plenty of names and expected to be in the top ten or fifteen of Western Canada would be SCOTTY OLSON, WILLIE DEWIT, DALE BROWN and the old timer from the Fifties WILF GREAVES. But, we can't forget some of the BC names such as HAROLD MANN, BERT LOWES, LINDY LINDMOSER and many more. For Quebec, we have some good potential such as ARMAND SAVOIE, DONATO PADUANO and JERRY SHEARS. For Ontario where do we start and end with folks from ASIF DAR to WALTER HENRY, and multi-term boxing champions such as MICHAEL STRANGE or Olympic medal winners such as LENNOX LEWIS or MARC LEDUC. And we can't forget IAN CLYDE or DOMENIC FIGLIOMENI.:hi:
THE NEVER ENDING STORY - a new round in my boxing journey. http://briansboxingbuzz.blogspot.ca/ This journey is another look at the journey with no end until the bright lights fade to black.
Just curious, but why are names like Tony Pep,who KO'd Dale Walters for the Canadian title and later won the Commonwealth title and Willie Featherstone who was Canadian LH champ and Commonwealth Champ and fought Virgil Hill for the World title not mentioned in these articles.Surly they accomplished more than some of your names mentioned ,did they not? Donovan Boucher is also another name who won the Canadian and Commonwelth titles and fought for a World title.Just asking.
A NEW JOURNEY BEGINS: - A CANADIAN AMATEUR BOXING WALL OF FAME AND HISTORY Introduction Over the years there have been many interesting moments for amateur boxing in Canada including the 1976 Montreal Olympics and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver in 1954 and Victoria in 1994. Although there are various halls of fame for sports in Canada, and the Boxing Canada does induct folks to their hall of fame from time-to-time (at best it is an invisible hall of fame with no public exposure with whose in and when - just some random names of folks that one may discover by accident. Also, there is a CANADIAN BOXING HALL OF FAME which is also clouded in myster, so there is support for a revival of the old or a fresh new CANADIAN BOXING HALL OF FAME, but the bricks and wood from the ground up may take years. Now the proposal for a CANADIAN AMATEUR BOXING WALL OF FAME. For some background, back in 1984/1985 time period while a director and editor with the BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING NEWS I suggested that Boxing BC begin their own Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame. But the suggestion remained dormant for 25 years. What triggered the renewed interest began in 2009 when I was approached by director JEEVAN DILLON of the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame to ask me if I would like to sponsor one of the inductees that was inducted in 2009 by the name of MIKE CAIRD, a former coach that I had coached with in the Seventies and helped to rebuild boxing in Greater Victoria. During this time period while putting together a story about coach Caird, I came across my old story about a BC AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME. In short order in BC, there were volunteers who agreed to join the journey to start a Hall of our own for 2010. After three years, we have inducted 41 boxers, builders, clubs and events with the core group of 2010 being 15 individuals that included 5 builders and ten boxers. The five builders are: DAVE BROWN, ELIO IUS, FRED FULLER, PAT O'REILLY and RICK BROUGH. Of the original six administrators, a few of us are still active with some new ones each year. Special thanks to STEVE WOOD and RAY BEAULIEU for staying active. THE CANADIAN WALL It began with a SUPPORT GROUP from across Canada, and is now followed by four regional groups including Western Canada, the Marities, Ontario and Quebec. By the end of December 2012m it is hoped the various groups will submit ten to fifteen names to a CANADIAN GROUP SITE to sort through the 40 to 50 names. There are some interesting front runners in the various regions, but anything can happen over the next month and into 2013, The three top ones for support in Western Canada include DALE BROWN, SCOTTY OLSON, and WILLIE DEWIT, but BC has a few that should make the final cut as well as Saskatchewan and Manitoba with names like Wesley Sunshine or Hank Hartenberger, In the Maritimes some top choices so far appear to be names like CHIRIS CLARKE, RAY DOWNEY, BOB EDGETT and TAYLOR GORDON, but there at least eight other names in contention to be the first ones picked In Ontario there are plenty of names such as LENNOX LEWIS and MICHAEL STRANGE and others, and Quebec has the likes of DONATO PADUANO, JERRY SHEARS, and a long list of others. IN FUTURE DAYS No one can guess as to the final results, but regardless of which ones get selected in year one, it is only the beginning to a different way of remembering, recognizing and appreciating the contributions and achievements of so many from days gone by.
As we are talking about AMATEUR BOXING, I do not think TONY PEP is relevant to selecting folks for amateur boxing in British Columbia. Also, Willy Featherstone was nominated for the ONTARIO AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME, so Willy isn't overlooked. TONY PEP belongs in the CANADIAN BOXING HALL OF FAME. Now DONOVAN BOUCHER may be one of the former amateurs that get nominated, but that is a Quebec issue where they must select who they want to nominate not you or I.:hi::bbb:good
