There are 3 things you have to consider though burt which you canot deny. 1) Louis looks much better on film for EVERYONE to see with thier own eyes. 2) In Dempsey's day World Champion really only meant american champion 3) Dempsey didnt fight blacks. Blacks who have dominated the sport since given the opportunity to.
Pachilles ,you might intimidate the present generation, but you are a foul mouthed punk...You leave my deceased mother out of your lexicon as I would never demean yours... Remember ,what I went through to protect the likes of you...I never insulted you or your family.Have I ?
Burt, I agree 100%. I am a Deacon in my church for approx. 25 years and I would never use that kind of language. In fact I never have at anytime. My father was also born in 1896, and died in 1967. He also rated Dempsey very high as well. He had high regard for Dempsey, Louis, Liston and Ali.
My gramps is in his 90's. He remembers stories about Fitzsimmons, Corbett, Jeffries, and Johnson. Dempsey and Louis were his favorites. Talk of the long count will get him going, even at his age!
Thanks hh for your feedback...Every great fighter has an aura about themselves, given to them by their peers, and our generation should take this in account, when judging our ancestral past...Thanks again... In the long run class will out....
He fought 3 black hall of famers, so he must have chose wisely..eh? How many did Dempsey take on? From 1916-1927 Jack Johnson, Harry Wills, Sam McVea, Joe Jeanette, Sam Langford, George Godfrey were all around and Jack Dempsey fought none of them. Not one. I guess getting his ribs broken by mediocre black fighter John Lester Johnson sent him a message.
djanders, do you know which Dempsey fights your dad saw? Did he share any first-hand accounts with you? Very interesting thread. :good
