You did good, the fight could have gone either way to be honest. The first and second rounds you did good in and you were landing a lot of straight rights. If you boxed more in the 3rd like you did the previous rounds I think you would've gotten the decision.

Yeh, im not too annoyed at it. The snow didnt affect me going to the gym that mcuh just missed 1 day.

Exactly what I think, I just think midway through the second I went forward instead of the counterpunching i was doing earlier

I think you were doing some very nice work through the fight with your left hand. Nice doubling up of the hook to the body and head. I actually think you hold your left hand a little high and it allows your opponent to see the punch coming when it drops to get in to punching position; if you held it a little lower you could parry and flick out that jab to better effect.

All in all it was a close fight and you did yourself proud Greg. Better luck next time :good

I think the lad you were in with was pretty good. Nice headmovement, speed, timing and feints. Whats his record?

BTW your still giving up your height and fighting at your opponents prefered range

    He was alright wasnt he?

Hes now 6-0, from what I had seen of him before he came forward alot and looked strong and hit hard. But he said he was wary of my body shots and backed off abit more.

Yeh, I couldnt get my distance right last night

You have the tools, the ability 'n, MOST IMPORTANT, the grit (you're no poseur) to get better results, GP.

Refreshing that you can be so clear-eyed 'n candid assessing yourself. You have every 'ol schooler here in your corner

I think you look improved! I think you look more organised, hands and feet. Well done. Here are some observations based upon one look at a small video:

    1 - It looks to me a little bit like you "decide" to punch. That's almost regardless of what your man is doing, obviously when you are in range, but other than that, not a lot of punch selection? This is why you start getting tagged when you are leading with the right which you do a little too often. It's not a good punch to use when your man is moving to his left and away for example. You didn't look particularly natural, I guess, and you should maybe be a little less rigid in your shot selection? Riff more (-;

2 - Bodyshots. Just when I thought you weren't going to bother with bodywork you throw a good bodypunch. But they are shots you forget a little bit then. I know the code you are fighting under doesn't favour them, but they are good for making your opponent think (basically your man is only thinking about your lead right) and making him worry about what you are throwing. For example, if you drop a couple rights on his body at the beginning of each round, it makes him less likely to move to his left, which makes your lead right upstairs more viable.

3 - When your opponent hits you, never ever retaliate in a straight line. When he hits you, you have to shift up the angle a bit before you try to tag him. If you just move in, his path for the counter-shot is just a matter of repeating what he's already done. You don't have to go Ali-crazy with this, just a little shift works wonders.

Overall I think you boxed well. I thought he won, but without that bad start, things might have been different.

Thanks that is good advice. Especially the 'deciding' to punch as I felt boxing the southpaw I was over anxious and over complicating things abit.

I thought I lost it and didnt box my best but no much I can do about it now. Will be back on the gym on Monday hopefully and working on this stuff.

I watched it again, he had some good footwork too, which makes it all the harder. I did have to give him the edge but it was reasonably close, you were getting him with some good rights, but I think he landed cleaner and started managing to step off as you came in and counter. I kept thinking he looked open to jabs and long left hooks.

I think his footwork is what edged it, and you were being a bit predictable in your approach which he was able to counter. Work on the footwork and remember not to rush in, take your time, predictability is your worst enemy

Good, close fight. And yes, that dude was good, nice movement laterally and vertically. Remember, he's facing orthodox fighters everyday of the week. How often are you facing southpaws? Still, nothing to be ashamed about. He was kinda lazy with his right and at times squared up, which contrary to the usual advice you receive about SP's, let's you have more opportunities with your hook. Oh well, easier said than done sometimes. Keep at it.

We spoke about it after and we both agreed whoever was the counterpuncher had the upperhand. I just got impatient

I don't know why but watching you I got the impression that you're just over-thinking out there. Like everything has to be perfect, so you don't let it flow. You're trying to follow a gameplan or method to a T and sometimes you can't do that. I agree with most of the advice that's been given.

The comments about footwork are true. I think more feints and maybe doubling up the jab more could have helped. I was wondering why you were the aggressor to as it seemed you generally aren't from films I've seen. Getting off first is good but so is patience. He seemed to have more of that. Good work though man. Keep it up.

Lastly in the end you seemed to be rushing in. Like a fighter who knows he is losing and just is getting desperate to fight to try winning the fight. You also seemed to have a reach advantage that you didn't try utilizing enough too.
