Hey guys I just got around to uploading my first sparring session. I should be sparring again today so I'll upload some more video's later to see if you notice any progress. Let me know what you think. Thanks

I am 19, 6'4 and 165 lbs if that matters at all.

This guy is 27, 6ft 215lbs and has been boxing for over 12 years. He took it easy on me here I think. He teaches me a lot, I should be getting in with him again today.

This guy is around my age and we both joined the gym about the same time, 6-7 months ago. He is about 6ft and 185lbs.

You have a hell of a lot of potential. You are pretty good especially for your first sparring session. Since I assume you want pointers/constructive criticism here goes.

Pros: You are fast, appear relaxed, and are patient. You seem aware of what is going on. You hold your hands high for the most part, despite the guys in your gym seeming to like to hold their left low. In the beginning those hands stay up, when you have found your style later you can drop the left if you like, but not yet.

Cons: If you factor in the fact that this was your first time out, not many. The only major problem I saw was sometimes when you jab you pull your right hand back passed your chin in anticipation of throwing it. Watch from :19 to :25 in the second video to see this. That right needs to stay glued to your chin. Being a tall fighter you may get away with it most of the time but the one time someone gets under that jab and fires one down the middle makes it worth keeping your guard in place. If you hit anything that measures punching power, you will find that pulling the right back passed your head doesn't actually generate that much more force.(try one of those punching meter games at a fair or arcade)

These are my two-cents. Keep working, and keep those hands up! I predict you will be able to beat both of those guys with ease in a few months, just don't fall into any sloppy habits. Those guys may mimic Roy Jones, but at 6'4 don't try that yourself.

If AchillesTheGreat doesn't see this thread, PM him. I'm sure he has some better tips for you.

Dude if this is your first spar, you look really good. Nice fundamentals, fairly tight guard, decent hand speed, movement is nice. Keep at it cuz you gonna get a lot better too.

This is a testament to people not being in a rush to spar. Getting 6 months under your belt of training and skill building first. You spar regularly now you're going to grow in leaps and bounds.

    Cool vid.

Looking well, nice and correct. The second guy should stop acting like he's Floyd Mayweather, and the first took it easy on you indeed. You could ask guy nr 1 to be more conventional, that's better for you. Sparring guy 2 is good for your confidence as you will beat the **** out of him IMO at some point (he's too open), but you won't learn as much. But you did well. Something you could work on is not throwing the jab lazily (you'll eat a counter right soon), retract it as quick as possible in the same line you threw it.

RDJ, Thanks. I ended up not sparring yesterday. Getting in there today, I'll keep all that in mind. I'll post the next set and let me know what you think.

Try to spar with some more conventional opponents chin down , elbows in , gloves on cheeks etc this will help prepare you for most Bouts you have ... all the best

I started training in February 2009 until early May 2009 then i Left for work and just got back in the gym at the start of September 2009... So altogether about 6 months of training under my belt. But was only in the gym 2 months before that sparring session.

As for more conventional opponents I mean for now there isn't much I can do, my trainer said he wants to take me out of the gym and start traveling to others soon though.
