Muhammad Ali & Joe Louis should be 1 & 2.

Marciano would be lucky to be top 5.

BTw Jack beat Godfrey in his previous fight, and these two wins must be among the best back to back non-title fight wins at Heavyweight ever.

Hello again MattDonnellon and Choklab - I've always thought that people go ridiculously over the top in saying things 'Well Dempsey didn't fight Wills so that basically over rules everything else he did and he doesn't deserve consideration as an all time great' - when in reality Dempsey faced the (in my opinion) far more capable (and certainly at the time he faced him) the far more dangerous and risky Sharkey - and then followed it up by going straight back in with the brilliant Tunney (who Wills himself refused an offer of) - and another thing i don't think Dempsey receives enough credit for is defending against a prime Tommy Gibbons who i think, although undersized, was another of the better pure boxers to have challenged for the title in history - would be interested to get your opinions on Tommy Gibbons aswell if you get chance drop your thoughts on him aswell.

thats right they were great wins. i think ali beat norton and frazier back to back to get his shot at foreman but i think they were for a usba title so you might be right?

where would you rate sharkey? I still think schmeling trumps him with his biggest wins and beter consistancy.

I think dempsey should have fought wills earlier than that, maybe even willard should have fought him over dempsey as wills best wins were around 1918-23ish. uzcudun was the guy who finaly burst wills buble but that was when wills was 37 and a veteran of 73 fights or so. uzcudun did not pan out to be an ATG but was hot contender for a time in the 20s.
Dempsey WAS THE BEST HEAVYWEIGHT of that period. he walked out of quite a lay off to lose the title and streight into top oposition fighting sharkey and tunney back to back and theres an argument he kod both. anyone should give a peak dempsey an edge against the best wills after examining both records.
tommy was big enough to compeate with dempsey as carpentier was. Dempsey was on top of his game and gibbons was forced into doing what he could to survive, dempsey made gibbons look worse than he was. jack just had an edge at that time where only another phenomanon would beat him. like a bigger peak duran with just too much fight in him.

Watch Sharkey versus Dempsey, Schmeling 1 and Loughran on Youtube and see what you think. He had good head movement, footwork, power in left and right, ring smarts-see how he took away Loughrans' great jab by moving to his own left because Tommy had no right hand power-and also how he fought big Carnera and then rate him yourself. Not being smart-assed BTW!

Oh, if Sharkey's head had been screwed on he could have been a serious proposition for anybody.

He didn't have any weakneses as a fighter from the neck down. He was basicaly good at everything.

could not agree more. there is 101 qualitys all great fighter need and sharkey had 100. that last 1% is crucial. i remember schmeling writing that in the ring waiting for his 2nd fight with louis to start the atmosphere was almost too much for him yet he looked across the ring and louis looked totaly unefected by it, like he was waiting for a bus not a bell. that goes a long way. being so strong mentaly. sharkey was too high strung by comparison.

he was a wonderful fighter on a good day. sharp as a tack, as good as anyone can be. but i just couldnt bet on sharkey if i was around then. i imagine his wife didnt no what guy he was going to be on any given day.

If 101 qualities are required then the missing one is less than 1%!
    (Grin)
Yeah, you are spot-on Sharkey was missing the head bit(Golota-like in a way), Bowe was missing discipline and so on.

Thats real nice of you for saying that to the guy. I too am new to these forums and while 99% of guys on here are pretty reasonable, i find 1 or 2 are quick to dismiss a persons opinion who hasnt a great deal of posts. This can be very misleading as everybody has to start somewhere and a lack of posts doesnt constitute a lack of knowledge. I, for one, wouldnt be in the same class as yourself and others on classic but that doesnt mean i dont have my opinions of fighters, or that im a mug (in fact, i think it makes you guys look better than you think) although im always open-minded and willing to look at others opinions or be schooled if need be. This is the only forum that i come on to, because to be honest ive kinda lost hope and interest in the sport this past 3 or 4yrs, what with the politics and **** match-ups, and my only outlet is Classic where i can read debates and opinions on REAL fighters. Anyway,i digress, i just thought it was decent of you to give the guy a few nice words and a heads up

I'm coming back to this because I think it's ridiculous you have Ali so low when you have two people he beat emphatically in your top ten also. With that quality of opponent, how can you justify placing him so low?
