I don't care if this is happening 5 years late; I'm still going to watch it because it's 2 HOF fighters - probably the 2 best 168 pounders ever - and neither guy has many more fights left in him. Yeah it'd be nice they were both prime, but I'm not going to nitpick about it.
atsch This is really stupid m8! Both Calzaghe's and Roy's fights are exciting... it's not Joe's fault if he breaks his hand, outclasses Lacy or gets hugged by Hopkins, but other than that, he's a very entertaining fighter. Hell, he's throwing a lot of punches, those 'slaps' stopped a lot of good fighters and he's very quick and aggressive. What more can you ask? Roy is all about entertainment, even past his prime he give the fans a show in the Tito fight. Speed, skill, a bit of show... it was better than everyone expected and it looked Roy had some of his mojo back. Put them together and they'll have a fight. No matter how old they are (Joe is 36, Roy is 39), the talent level and the exciting style creates a good fight. On the other hand, expect Hopkins to kill any excitement in the Pavlik fight. The age difference is 17 years there, and Bernard has to create a fight as ugly as ever to stop the physical force Kelly brings to the ring. But how often do you see Roy Jones or Joe Calzaghe hugging, running around the ring, fighting defensive minded? Yep, NEVER! A press conference quote was spot on: Roy Jones had a lot of entertaining fights. But he never had A FIGHT, and Joe Calzaghe will bring the best out of the late Roy - expect fireworks! Then again: it's gonna be a lot, I mean a LOT more exciting than most people think, despite Calzaghe being the favorite. Roy will be VERY competitive and Joe'll have to dig deep... But if you don't have big expectations a good fight can be a pleasent surprise...
so this is basically a roy apreciation society rather than your 2 cents on the subject??anyone who has so much sentimentality and man love for a fellow man is clearly in a land called narnia!!
yah **** calzaghe for fighting old ass fighters like hopkins..kellys the man he fights real.............oh wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My own feeling is that Calzaghe will win when the referee stops it, somewhere between rounds 4 and 9.
obviously a guy with the name of "Executioner" is going to think the logic is flawed, but the fact is, Roy is a harder puncher than bernard, fought naturally bigger men for most of his career than bernard, and can still show amazing flashes of counterpunching. Calzaghe is not exactly willie pep when it comes to defense, and has been down in previous fights. Also, if you use the logic bernard ko'ed tito while Roy didn't, it was quite obvious Roy could have taken the KO over Tito if he really wanted it in round 7, or at any point really, if he put his punches together.
nitpick.... nitpick... I think there is a slightly stronger case for questioning the validity of the fight then just nitpicking.
