My interpretation of Usyk at heavy--he's a bit bored.

Look, a lot has been made of Usyk's less-than-inspiring fights against Witherspoon and Chisora. First off, yeah, the guy has a lot of ring rust. But let me bottom lines something, here.

    Punches Throws against...

    Huck (over 10)- 758, 75.8 a round
    Glowacki (over 12)- 741 , 61.75 a round
    Mchunu (0ver 9)- 517, 57.4 a round
    Hunter (over 12)- 905, 75.4 a round
    Breidis (over 12)- 848, 70.6 a round
    Gassiev- (over 12)- 939, 78.24 a round
    Bellew (over 8)- 424, 53 a round
    Witherspoon (over 7)- 347, 49.6 a round
    Chisora (over 12) - 614, 51.2 a round

Are you getting the math, here? Usyk's power is that he is capable of throwing a massive number of punches, but he only throws as many punches against an opponent as he has to. If you want to believe that this fall off comes because in two years, he has aged enough to take away a third of his punch capacity, or, if you think that he just needs to show respect against massive heavyweight punchers like Chisora and Witherspoon, you be my guest and believe that.

I guarantee that if he gets a fight for a world heavyweight title, he will throw a thousand punches in the fight, and leave y'all eating your words.

I still don’t get people’s complaint about his Chisora performance. As the rounds progressed Usyk’s workrate and mobility were killing Chisora. Chisora in the middle rounds looked like he wanted to quit and like he was going to have a heart attack, but his corner kept him together.

As long as Usyk stays injury free I don’t see any of the top heavyweights having an easy time with him.

Usyk had coronavirus before Chisora fight. Maybe that had an impact as well.

Ive long stopped believing in the frequent myths that get brought up about elite fighters just being 'bored' or overlooked their opponents and didnt take the fight as seriously as they should have, when popular fighters underperform.

Its almost never the case, and is instead usually the simple truth that they werent as good as previously thought and/or are indeed in decline.

Im expecting its a bit of both for Usyk.

    But time will tell.

All interesting points in this thread. I'm looking forward to his next fight which will shed more light on things.

The one point I can make is since turning pro I can't think of one time Usyk has ever been in trouble, is this right?

(Briedis was a tough fight tho.)

bookmarked. Haha. For what it’s worth I think Usyk’s the real deal but I also think a HW will knock him out cold. Sitting on the fence 101 lol

probably reckon he gets his lights turned out if I was pressed on it tho.

Won’t know until he faces an elite HW. Whyte level or higher. AJ is his most likely and then we can all come back here in glory or shame at our old posts.

With that in mind I believe Usyk loses to AJ inside eight. Fury inside six. Wilder was a 50/50 fight before Tyson Fury ate his soul. Now Wilder loses but is irrelevant since he doesn’t have a belt.

He has beaten Majidov and Joyce in pro-style, no-headgear fights, and Gassiev, who Chris Arreola said was the hardest puncher he was ever in with (after sparring). So I find it extremely doubtful anyone turns out his lights.

    But hey, we will see.

good arguments. He’s not a natural heavyweight for me but that’s kinda the exciting part.

We haven’t seen the best of Usyk at HW. He’s just so much smaller than the big HWs, I need to see him against a top five guy to really have a good idea of how he stacks up. He is cautiously getting acclimated to the new weight class. Whatever happens, I give the guy credit for stepping up in weight and fighting bigger guys. The money is better but so are the risks.
