I box amateur and every so often I get a bout filmed and post it on here for some feedback to better my boxing.

Now this was my last fight (from Saturday), it was the Northern District of Scotland title, at 69KG (the weight above my usual weightclass). I will be entering the Scottish at the end of this month at 64kgs.

I am in the blue corner.

I'd appreciate any feedback or thoughts.

    Thanks

Well done Greg...pretty comfortable win there.

    How old are you now?

Was this Leo Sayer kid a bit older? He seemed bigger physically and his punches sounded like they had a bit of power on them.

I think the lower weight would probably suit you better mate but you looked good here..to skilled and workmanlike for this dude. Seemed like he just wanted to land a couple of big shots to get you out of there.

17 now, 18 in October, so my last year of youth boxing then its senior.

Boy was the same age but the higher weight, I missed my weight by a pound so was giving up anything up to 5kg to this guy.

Had a funny style, just looked for the big one, that I seen coming. Was strong and could hit fairly hard, though. Tough guy. He was undefeated in 7 and the Scottish Novice champion, so he was not a bad guy either.

Looking good Greg, your mixing your shots up nicely. I think all those old masters your watching can't be a bad thing. just 2 things, don't get careless and make sure your in shape. Apart from that keep on doing what your doing, it's coming together.
What did you weigh for that one and how did you feel. Will you get down to 64 kilos alright?

You going to try to fight often to get your experience levels up?

You will be fighting men once you step up...or do they try to keep you in with teenagers for a while?

Yeh, I think watching the boxing helps my technique.

I did get careless, don;t know why I normally get stuck in, here I was uninterested for some reason. I think maybe the weight was tough, not that it was a struggle to get down just did it wrong (and missed it in the end). Should be in prime condition for the Scottish, and make 64kg easy, goneon a proper diet and everything.

I might have 2 fights before the Scottish at the end of this month. I'd love to say busy, just a matter of getting the fights. Hopefully I will fight often.

Ive had 3 senior bouts, won 1 and lost 2 (and they was real close), just the strength is the difference a bit bigger physically so harder to move around. I'm just going in with anyone who will fight me at the moment.

My only advice would have been for you to make fun of his stupid hair while clinching.

I think you might have found a little more success punching up the middle to the head and solar plexus area with uppercuts and short straights. He kept clinching you really high, might have been an opportunity there. Good stuff though Greg.

How do your parents feel about you fighting?

    Greg,

I think you fought a superb fight! You were fighting a strong guy in there. In teh opening moments of the second you shined, it looked like it is coming together for you. Nice snap on that inside left hook to the body! The way you fought in the opening moments of the second round is how you should do your business. Doubling and tripling on the left jab to set your right hand up. That was really nice! Around teh 6:38 mark you started walking towards your opponent with both hands low, careful about that and were a little anxious with right hands, draw his guard away with teh jab, then try those rights. You're a tall kid but you love to mix it up! You got closer than you really had to from teh looks of the film.
Please take this stuff in a constructive way...but overall a really fine effort! Start of second round was awesome stuff...I like that jab, use it more!!! YOu fight like a professional, not an amatuer. Guys will try to outslick you with pitty-pats, use that stick and keep em backed up. Nice job.

Well done Greg, you were the general in there and dictated the fight to him. Maybe this is a good weight class for you? You know your body like so i'm not trying to tell you, but you looked comfortable in there.

That wasn't a fight, that was a public beating lol.

You look like you haven't got your man-strength yet, and as you said this was above your natural weightclass. You might find yourself back up there soon, so this was good experience. You seem to have good power, and you're likely to get magically stronger soon so that's only going to improve.

Conditioning looked like it could have been better. That's always something that you can work on, might've gotten that guy out of there if you had that extra gas in the tank.

That said, it was a good opportunity to practice countering on the inside, which you did pretty well. That'll come in handy as you get tougher opponents so keep working on it.

Punch selection and combos were great, went to the body well. One thing that'll help you is quicker footwork (you've definitely watched your Joe Louis :) )...you have quick hands and can get guys to cover up, but with a quick pivot or angle change you can sneak in some good solid power shots and really throw guys off and confuse them.

    Good stuff, keep it up!

Congrats on the win. I'd work on recoiling your punches making them harder to counter. At times there looks to be a bad habit of coming in straight lines to close range with your chin straight up in the air. Sometimes you slap/punch wide but you clearly can punch correctly, so that maybe a timing issue, or maybe working at stepping into them more, or maybe you just rush under pressure

I personally think you'd work better as an outboxer rather than giving up your height, doubling and trebbling the jab to set your shots up or just control the action. When you do give up height though I'd focus on developing your uppercut to make use of your leverage inside, more uppercuts would have helped as you tired down the stretch as they are easy to throw when tired.

Nice shoulder rolling under pressure and a good win, you landed your punches and overall your defense worked well, are you going to rematch that lefty anytime soon?
