1. Joe Louis 2. George Foreman 3. Muhammad Ali 4. Jack Johnson 5. Rocky Marciano 6. Larry Holmes 7. Lennox Lewis 8. Sonny Liston 9. Jack Dempsey 10. Walcott
Schmeling doesn't have the depth Walcott does.... Charles, Johnson, Ray, Bivins, Murray, Maxim, Baksi, Hoff, Sheppard, Gomez, Reddish, Agramonte over Sharkey, Walker, Stribling, Uzcuden, Risko, Hamas, Neusal, Heuser
And Schmeling has the best win of the two, and arguably the best win in the history of the HW division. That's why I often feel Schmeling should be the higher of the two. But it's close, and I think either one over the other is fine. Neither is anywhere near the top ten.
Only if your cut and dry with your rankings based on actual victories. You can't award fantasy wins, but if a fighter wins for the majority of the public than it counts for an awful lot. Never understood why performances in losses was such an undervalued factor to evaluating a fighters record, hence my ranking of Liston. I won't digress...
1. Louis 2. Ali 3. Holmes 4. Marciano 5. Foreman 6. Frazier 7. Holyfield 8. Tyson 9. Lewis 10. Johnson 11. Liston 12. Dempsey 13. Jeffries 14. Schmeling 15. Wlad 16. Patterson 17. Walcott 18. Charles 19. Wills 20. Bowe 21. Vitali
Everyone has different critera for list. I just don't see how Walcott could be #5. He lost many times to guys not named Marciano, Louis, or Charles. Can you tell us why you feel Walcott deserves such a lofty placing?
I thought he had a weak era and a lot of his defenses were with guys that had 10 fights, 13 fights 14 fights and won disputed decisions over 2 guys with 15 fights. Holmes never rematched a tough fight, Norton,Weaver,Witherspoon,Williams and avoided a unification and gave up a title not to fight Page. Holmes was also navigated very well. He fought a 10-2-2 Leon Spinks after Spinks was KO'd in 1 rd by Gerrie Coetzee and fought Renaldo Snipes who was dropped 2 times by Coetzee but got the robbery and Holmes gave him the shot and was Dropped badly by Snipes. Holmes best Victory was over Gerry Cooney and Shavers. Holmes also had co-champ like Dokes, Thomas, Coetzee,Weaver,Tate and Larry did not attempt to unify. Intimately he lost to Light heavyweight Michael Spinks in Mikes 1st fight as a heavyweight. I think Holmes was very good but can not place him near Louis,Ali and Marciano who did all the things Holmes did not.
Charles was an excellent fighter at heavyweight and he could beat many on a given night, however I think JJW had the style to upset many on a good night. I like him to trouble Ali, he did trouble Marciano and Louis and he beat some excellent fighters in his day. I like JJW chances against Foreman,Tyson Ali, he was a master stylist who could KO a man with either hand and as cute as they come. He is the spoiler of the division and had all the tools
Walcott had a rough start and we all know the story's, underfeed, worked a job, then the gym and most nights went without a meal. I think he beat Louis in fight 1 and gave Marciano hell for almost 13 rds. I like JJW to be a tough foe vs Foreman,Tyson,Ali,Dempsey, etc.
Even after his rough start Walcott was 0-4 in his first title shots. Walcott had attributes that gave a slow footed and easy to his Louis trouble, and a less skilled Marciano trouble, but I still can't see him as a top 10 guy, even if I think he deserved the nod in the first Louis fight.
Jersey Joe in the top 5 that's a new one :good He was a bad ass mother thats for sure. Bit under rated sometimes methinks
It's good to see different agenda's and idea's of each posters list, however, I do have a problem when nobody wants to rank brothers Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko in the top-20......... Again, H-2-H or Resume, either way you slice the pizza, the brothers can fight and are lethal, and are great..... Time will tell......... They are future IBHOF fighters...... WORD! MR.BILL:bbbhat:think
I don't rank relevant fighters cos they aren't finished yet. If both brothers retired today i'd have wlad top 15 and vitali top 25
Fair enough........ BUT! Finished or not, both brothers can kick way more ass from the ATG list dating back to 1887 than the 15-25 ranking you have mentioned... IMO! In my book... Older bro V.K. is superior and tougher than younger bro Wlad Klit who's skills are superb, yet his chin is shaky.... Cheers.....:good MR.BILL:hat
