I was just watching A commercial with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and it got me thinking about him as a fighter, me personally, I never really liked Floyd but it's impossible to deny how insanely talented this guy is. He's one of those fighters that comes around every so often that just at a whole other level. So I wondered why I hated him so much and it dawned on me that I still have memories of all the guys that came before and were great, Robinson, Chavez, Hagler, and all the others had a quality that made them great that Floyd just doesn't have, and that is his heart as a boxer. Most if not all of the fighters recognized as an ATG fought any one who was perceived as a threat to them, Floyd is only fighting medium to low risk high reward fights i.e. Oscar(great career but much faded), Hatton(just to small and weak at 147 although it was still impressive by FM), Carlos Baldomir(come on do i even need to explain this one), when the top guy's around that weight were Cotto, Shane and, Margo plus guys like Clottey PW. These were fights that would have made a lot of money and would have silenced ANY talk about Floyd not being and ATG. But the best fights out there were never made and Floyd has failed to show a true Championship quality that will forever have people questioning is true place in boxing history. Sorry for the long rant
welter weight venture are just icing to floyd's already established career. i find it amazing how every judges floyd only by his welter accomplishments.
19 championship fights is rare to see in any era. especially when is all wins and most of them by shut out performances. Sounds like an undoubtly atg to me who is more than qualify to stand with the likes of Robinson, leonard, ali. champion in 5 weight classes, resume filled with known fighters, won his first title in 18th fight, fastest person to win titles in 5 weight class in 7 years. Holds the best statistical of land/land upon ratio since the compute box. obviously you haven't thought too much.
over his 11 or so years as a pro he spent probably around 9-10 years fighting upper level to top tier guys, he spent about 4 years or so at or just below welter so for just shy of half of his time on the top, and lets not forget that he's still not finished he has failed to fight the most dangerous guys around him. And if its true he might fight marquez @ 147 no less than he is still dodging the best guys around him. Plus he wants to fight pac or hatton again after that. Yea he was great at lightweight, but ask yourself this was he GREAT at welter. Sorry the answer is no
Floyd isn't an ATG at WW but wanted fights and things didn't happen. You cannot deny he beat the ex champ and current champ in back to back fights. WW is Floyds 4th weight class.
who cares if he is the man at welter or not. He was acting like paul williams chasing big names who were terrified of him. He held two titles at 147 and 154 at one point. He doesn't give two bits of where which weight class he competed at as long as he can fight big dollars fight. It wasn't a secret. He openly said he wants big fights. when he was at 135lb he routinely announces that he would jump two weight classes to fight shane mosely and oscar but they ducked floyd. Kostya declined an offer from floyd to fight hatton and lost anyways.
i dont like mayweather because the way he fights... i dont know what will happen to the sport if all boxes like him.... two fighters above the ring both running always...
The best guy at welter right now is Shane Mosley and he once again said he wants shane mosely too. You can speculate that Margarito is better than baldomir or judah all you want but they never fought and margarito was never THE MAN until he beat Cotto so why should floyd fight on paper the 3rd best guy in the divison when he can fight the number 1???????
In my eyes, he is an ATG.. But, he needs to erase all doubt and come back - beat at least a couple of great fighters, to go down as anything other than a wasted great. Floyd should be looking at fighting JMM asap, then Pac - then Mosely. It would be interesting to see who Floyd viewed as a bigger threat to himself - whether it was Pac or Mosely.. There are pros and cons to fighting either Mosely or Pac, but I believe the pros for fighting Mosely - outweigh fighting Pac, which the only obvious pro factor in that fight, would be the size of Pac against Floyd.. But, Pacs fight against Hatton will tell us alot, lot more about how good Pac really is, whether he is as good as he looked against Oscar - or whether Oscar was just done as dusted as a fighter.. Cant wait to see Pac Vs Hatton..
Totally agree. The average fan would have so much more overall respect for him(not just his talent) if he took some risks. He has more than enough talent to face the top WWs he just lacks that competetive spirit of wanting to prove himself. He fights 4 money not 4 pride or love of the sport
not a person around would have ever thought at anytime Baldomir was better or a better match up than antonio margarito...horse **** to what u just about him not being anything until cotto.... floyd avoided that mexican like the plague
