1. Joe Gans 2. Henry Armstrong 3. Sam Langford 4. Roberto Duran 5. Ray Robinson 6. Carlos Monzon 7. Joe Louis 8. Willie Pep 9. Marvin Hagler 10. Harry Greb
Wow. Ray Robinson at #5, and no Ezzard Charles. I don't think Duran over Robinson is reasonable. And Gans at #1. Well, it's different. And different is interesting, at least.
Ask Duran or Whitaker to go 42 rounds with a peak Battling Nelson. Ask Sam Langford who the greatest and best fighter ever was.
Robinson was extremely sweet to watch but was always greatly troubled by crowders (Gavilan, Angott, Zivic, Armstrong, Basora, LaMotta etc). Montreal Duran would've beaten him H2H. Robinson would've been annihilated by Hagler or Barkley, punched out of the ring most likely. Then take into account Palomino/Moore and his legendary lightweight career, Duran. It's Roberto for me, just.
There's very little footage of Robinson in his welterweight days. The footage we do have suggests an entirely different picture to me. Robinson creates space and punches huge. I don't think Duran, extremely great as he was, could have dictated where the fight would take place against Robinson. It is very much the question if he could force the fight to inside. But heck, what do I know. Predicting what happens when two such ring geniuses come together is a fool's errand, but one I like to indulge in.
Beat everyone and anyone like they'd never been beat before before he even became champion, and then beat five future world champions in Obelmejias, Duran, Hearns, Mugabi and Leonard and was a two-time Ring Fighter of The Year. Unheard of almost.
Good point, there is no way in particular Duran, would of been able to 'carry' the Dane for that long, without people getting suspicious!
Sugar Ray Robinson beat all those guys. He played with Armstrong. Beat LaMotta 5 out of 6. Beat Zivic twice including knocking him out. Beat Angott. Basora? Eh..one tough night and destroyed him in the rematch. Gavilian was a great fighter and not sure Duran at his best could handle the Kid.
Greatly troubled by crowders? Of the examples you listed Robinson lost ONE fight against all of those names, all of whom are HOFers. Ive never heard of Robinson being troubled by either Zivic or Armstrong, both of whom he dominated. He owned Angott in their first fight and dropped him in the second and third, winning both. He lost one fight in his first 11 years and 100+ fights as a pro against all different types and sizes of fighters. Its pretty hard to make the argument he was GREATLY troubled by crowders. Robinson would have been annihilated by Hagler or Barkley (BARKLEY???). Who ever beat Robinson by annihilation? Nobody. Bizarre list. Hagler at ten? Honestly? You cant think of 10 fighters in history that are P4P better than Hagler? What did Hagler ever do to prove his P4P status? He feasted on smaller guys coming up and often looked vulnerable in those fights (Duran, Mugabi, Leonard). Besides the smaller fighters his division was at one of the weakest points in its history. He could have easily moved up and really shown what he was made of against Spinks but strangely for Hagler nobody ever considers him even competetive with Spinks despite a ton of other middleweights moving up to light heavy with success. Talk about getting annhilated and Spinks-Hagler immediately jumps to mind.
