Is Floyd Mayweather Jr. ducking Manny Pacquiao? After all he did let the deadline to sign the contract for a November fight slip by. To discuss this matter we need to talk about: 1. The deadline, 2. The Contract, 3. The boxers and 4. The future of both boxers and rather or not the fight is completely dead. 1. The deadline. The deadline that was set for this past Friday was not agreed to by both parties but set by Top Rank the promotion Co. of Bob Arum that promotes Pacquiao. The deadline is not a deadline to end negations with Mayweather but to end exclusive negations with him. There may be a 10 day grace period before Top Rank contacts other boxers on Pacquio's behalf. 2. The contract. According to Arum all issues were agreed to. However the contents of the contract remain unknown to the public. I think the big issue is drug testing. Mayweather has made no secrete that he wants completely random blood and urine testing right up to the fight. Pacquiao has made no secrete him self that he would like to have a cut off date. During the first negations Pacquiao was looking for around 30 days. Mayweather was willing to compromise for 14 days but that was only a compromise for the time being. Not necessarily a binding agreement. My guess is that there is a cutoff date of about 14 days for blood testing in the contract. From Mayweather's standpoint this may be a deal breaker. 3. The Boxers. No boxing match can take place with out the boxers so lets talk about them. Manny Pacquiao: No matter what happens from hear on out Manny Pacquiao is assured his place in history. He's a seven division world champion one of the most exciting boxers and one of the most loved boxers in history. When talking about the All time top 10, Manny Pacquiao belongs in the debate. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Like Pacquiao Floyd Mayweather Jr. is also assured his place in history no matter what happens as well. He is a five division champion considered by many to be the best at one of them (130) of all time. He is among the most skilld in the history of the sport. Like Pacquiao any debate of the all time great top 10 needs to include Floyd Mayweather Jr. They have both made a lot of money and lead very comfortable lives due to boxing. Hears the problem. Neather Mayweather or Pacquiao really have anything left to prove. Sure a win will enhance their all time rankings, but they both have a ceiling. It is called Sugar Ray Robinson. Who I don't think most boxing experets will ever admit anyone is better than him even if they were better than him. So what we have is a situation where neather boxer has any real reasoon to back down from their positions. 4. The future of Pacquiao and Mayweather. It looks like Top Rank is going to contact other boxers on Pacquiao's behalf. Most likely Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. In my opinion these are the last two guys he should be looking at. Pacquiao has already beat and easily beat Cotto. Sure Cotto is coming off a good win over Yuri Foreman, but Pacquiao/Cotto was not even close. For a while it looked like Margrito might be the next great Mexican boxing star than January 24th 2009 happened. If getting dominated by Shane Mosley was not bad enough. It was discovered before the fight that his hand wraps were loaded. Bringing into question his entire resume. Both Cotto and Margarito provide another risk for Pacquiao the fights would be at or around 154. Normally I'm all for boxers taking risks but with a fight with Mayweathr still possible playing it safe is the smart move. For the 5′ 6½″, 154 may be a weight class to big. For Pacquiao the smart fight is with Timothy Bradley at 140 or 147. Bradley is an emerging talent who Pacquiao should be able to beat. Beating Bradley will give Pacquiao more power at the negotiating table next time around than wins over Cotto or Margrito would. For Mayweather it looks like he is done for 2010. For a while he has been a one or two fight a year boxer. I don't think this is going to ever change. The upcoming trial of his Uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather may also be an added reason for him to sit out the rest of the year. There is the possibility of a July date for Mayweather and Pacquiao. If this is so it is likely that we won't see Mayweather in a boxing ring tell than. If for some reason Mayweather decides to fight before. Andre Breto is the smart fight for him. Like Bradley Breto is also an emerging talent and an easy win who should bost Mayweather's position at the table. So What happened? Seems that the big problem might be the contract it's self. While ther is talk that Mayweather dose not want to go into this fight without Roger Mayweather by his side and no one should blame him for this and that he might not be planing to fight again this year. I suspect that the "agreement" or terms in the contract on drug testing is a 14 day or so cutoff. At the end of the day this is a deal breaker for Mayweather. The fight is not dead yet. It will most likely happen next year. I don't think Mayweather is going to budge on his stance on drug testing. I think it is going to be the terms of all his fights like it was with Mosley. Some words on the matter from Mayweather would clear a lot up.
you know ill give may his respect he moves up to 154 fights the best in that division I really wouldnt hold this pac contract breakdown. I enjoy watching mayweather fight, he is a great boxer with amazing speed and defense I just want to see him challenged like he was in his younger days/ lower weight-classes. Im tired of the bull****, I just want to see pac and may fight if not each other than someone that can thrill us by giving us a competitive fight.
I want to add that both these guys are at the peak of their talents. before they start to slide downhill I would like to see what they are truley capable of. every fight cant be a $30 ultra mega fight of the century give us great matchups for us fans! they will get their money!!
quit defending floyds ***** ass . . He needs another year off after 2 fights? How conveniant. Just like he needed those two years off during a stacked welterweight division.
" For a while he has been a one or two fight a year boxer. I don't think this is going to ever change." Lets break this down. "For a while he has been a one or two fight a year boxer." He has not fought more than twice a year since 2006. This is a fact. It can not be disputed. There is nothing in this statement that is defending or attacking Mayweather for fighting twice a year. "I don't think this is going to ever change." Purely opinion on my part. Than again I never claimed it to be anything else. If you look at the pattern the most logical conclusion that I think you can come to is that for the rest of his career. Floyd Mayweather is only going to fight once or twice a year. I have made no statement on rather that is good or bad. I did state in this or an other thread that Mayweather fights generate enough income that there may not be the incentive for Mayweather to fight more than he dose. Once again this is neather a defense of or an attack on Mayweather.
