I just got Springs Toledo's book The Gods Of War in paperback and read the section focusing on his Ten Greatest Fighters of the Modern Era. I thought it was an excellent read and am looking forward to reading the rest of the book. Every one of his top 10 had significant accomplishments against the absolute best opponents over a lengthy period of time. My own revised list is as follows: 1. Sugar Ray Robinson Could do it all in the ring; ruled 2 different weight divisions in 2 different decades. Welterweight in the 40's (never lost a welterweight fight) and Middleweights in the 50's. 2. Harry Greb Considered by many experts the Greatest Middleweight of all time, fought and best the best Middleweights, Light Heavyweights & and Heavyweights of his time. Gave future HEAVYWEIGHT champion Gene Tunney his only loss. 3. Sam Langford Fought and best the best fighters from Lightweight to Heavyweight. Jack Johnson refused to give him a shot at the title after becoming champion. 4. Henry Armstrong 3 titles simultaneously in 3 different weight divisions and a record 19 welterweight defenses in just two and a half years! 5. Muhammed Ali Considered by most the Greatest Heavyweight of all time Ali cleaned out the Heavyweight division in the 60's and 70's against the toughest opponents possible. 6.Joe Louis The Brown Bomber was the most dominant Heavyweight Champion on history and was truly a fighting champion wirh a record 25 successful title defenses over 11+ years. 7. Ezzard Charles The Greatest Light-Heavyweight of all time beat the great Charley Burley twice, Archie Moore three times and won the Heavyweight Championship against a faded Joe Louis. 8. Willie Pep The Greatest Featherweight ever and one of the greatest defensive fighters ever. Fought the fight of his life in beating Nemesis Sandy Sadler in their second meeting in what was one of the greatest performances in the history of the sport! 9. Benny Leonard His skills and ring intelligence were nonpareil as he truly demonstrated why boxing was known as "The Sweet Science" during his reign over the lightweight division. 10. Roberto Duran Manos De Piedra ruled the lightweight division with an iron fist, won the welterweight titlefrom the best welterweight of the era, was competitive with the regning Middleweight champion Marvin Hagler, and even won the 168 point title from a younger and stronger opponent in Iran Barkley. I'm especially interested in the opinions of Mike Cannon, Janitor, Rumsfeld & George Crowcroft. Gentlemen, what say you?
He has the same top 4, in the same order, as me. 9 of these 10 appear in my top 10. The only one that doesn't, Pep, is my #11. My top 10: SRR Greb Langford Armstrong Charles Fitz Duran B. Leonard Louis Ali
#01. Harry Greb #02. Ray Robinson #03. Henry Armstrong #04. Sam Langford #05. Ezzard Charles #06. Benny Leonard #07. Roberto Duran #08. Muhammad Ali #09. Bob Fitzsimmons #10. Archie Moore
Listen, guys like Langford are fine for modern times but the generations before that were just built tougher.
Toledo's book is excellent. A couple of points. Johnson signed to defend agsinst Langford in Australia and posted a $10,000 bond to do so. The fight was pulled when Johnson skipped bail. Charles was already champion when he defended against Louis. There is no E in Muhammad. Good list!
