Let's hope so as he has no future in the sport.

Yeah he could make money being fed to prospects but will get hurt badly if he does as he doesn't have the survival skills like Kevin Johnson does.

That does seem to be the case now with Miller and Kownacki brushing him aside. The Wilder fight flattered Washington, sure he out boxed Wilder but Wilder was inactive and coming off an injury and Wilder isn't difficult to outbox.

I expected Kownacki to win but didn't think he'd do it so quickly. Kownacki has real momentum now, I've been saying for a while Haymon seems to be building Kownacki and allowing him to fight his other heavies, Szpilka, Martin and now Washington. Kownacki has now fought 2 Wilder opponents and beaten them more convincingly, he'll definitely get a title push if Wilder loses to Fury as he seems to be the clear number 2 Haymon heavyweight.

They are similar in a sense that they are both, well, not the most technically skilled boxers. But both are very smart fighters in their own way, who rely heavily on their natural abilities. For Kownacki it’s his extraordinary chin and for Miller it’s mostly his size. Both prefer to use block and, again, just their tough bodies to let their opponents punch at them and get tired in order to get rid of them later.

In this case I thought the fight would follow that blueprint, as well – like Kownacki taking punches from Washington in the first part of the fight and beating/stopping him in the second, but Washington was significantly worse than I had expected.

I think Miller is more effective, yes, but mostly because Kownacki is a fat CW, in fact.

I still find it strange... even if a smaller teenager hit you on the head you would still get dazed.

Surely hitting the heavybag regularly you can feel what registers as a strong punch.

    Its crazy

Looking at him you'd think he'd hit hard but if you don't have the technique to deliver all that mass into the point of your fist all the mass means nothing. Washington is an arm puncher, so he's not putting all his body weight behind his shots, he gets no shoulder or waist rotation to create torque and as MarcelCerdan13 said his footwork is awful so he can't create leverage and little things like pivoting your feet can create way more power when throwing a punch, which he also doesn't do.

Disagree about a smaller teenager hitting your head would leave you dazed, maybe if you had an Amir Khan like chin and even then Khan might take it. I've been sucker punched by a guy before but because it was an arm punch there was very little force behind it, I wasn't dazed or buzzed at all, though my lip was busted because he was wearing a ring. If that guy had even half decent punch mechanics he would of sparked me out, but in reality his arm punch was basically like a slap from a tiny woman.

Yeah, looks like my prediction was pretty spot-on. I didn't even consider Washington to be one of the top-50 HWs in the world leading up to this fight. I don't think many people will be challenging my opinion now.

    a) Washington's style (I'll call it "prance and jab") was easily deterred by Kownacki's pressure - and only threw 9 jabs before the stoppage. Adam dictated the ring movement after about the first 30 seconds.
    b) Washington's defense is truly terrible and no amount of his proclaiming himself to be "defensively-minded fighter" can refute what we saw last night. Really, he made Kownacki (who at least has the basics of tucking in one's chin when throwing a punch) look like James Toney by comparison.

The funny thing is - Washington laid the groundwork for what could have been a winning fight in the first 60 seconds when he opened that cut on Kownacki. If he had been able to create some distance and work that cut - he might have either forced the doctor to stop it or at least forced Kownacki to protect it and made himself some opportunities with the body. Whether Washington was incapable of doing that (likely) or it never even occurred to him to try to do that (and don't rule that possibility out) is unknown.

But what is known - is that Washington simply hasn't got it. Any of Kownacki's last 3 opponents would certainly beat Washington and I suspect all would stop him.

Kownacki looked very sharp and I'm definitely a fan of his, but I'm going to hold off on proclaiming him the heir apparent to Povetkin as the "world's most dangerous pressure fighter" until I see him repeat this feat against a better opponent.

And I will finish with this - Kownacki bleeds easily. That "Baby Face" is a bit too baby-soft. Yeah, Kownacki gets hit a lot and when you get hit a lot - you're likely to bleed - but he does seem to get cut consistently. Throw him in with a rangy boxer-puncher type or anybody who can create some distance and work off a jab - and there could be real problems for Adam.

Strangely-enough it's Washington's jab that he sits down into. That's all wrong, obviously, and I think it contributes to his "gassing-out" problem", but I have an explanation for it.

In keeping with my general belief that Washington is a bit more "El Pollo Negro" than "El Gallo Negro" - he's more confident when he throws his jab because it means he has some distance between himself and the other fighter and that gives him confidence. As the saying goes - "when you sit you commit". Kownacki had no problem doing that last night.

Exactly. Washington is a journeyman-level fighter without a journeyman's skill-set. Not the very best punch resistance either.

I supposed Washington could do the "Malik Scott thing" and become a full-time camp fighter - but apart from being tall and being able to throw a jab against a fighter who will let him prance around the ring - it isn't clear to me what actual skills GW possesses.

Fair enough, but Washington has been boxing for a while now. He hasn't learnt how to throw a punch yet? No one told him? I mean this is something you can figure out yourself over time.

I've sparred big teenagers, that are smaller than washington but 17 year 6'1 225 pound guy and caught me with a lightish hook and I was dazed.

    And he was quite new.

You feel punches hitting your head even by smaller people.

Sometimes athletes and talents from other sports with everything going for them physically, like Washington, underachieve despite everything.

    Some, however, actually overachieve...

Kornacki has heart and a good chin. He's developed some boxing IQ from a lot of sparring

What he doesn't have is defense. He is a "I'll take a shot and give back two" guy. That works great until it doesn't.

As he works his way up through the ranks, he will run into power he can't walk through. He will learn some defense or have a short career as a top ten guy.

You can show a fighter how he should throw a punch, but whether they can actually execute it properly is another matter and knowing how to throw a punch and throwing a punch with power are quite different things. He obviously can throw a punch, but they are arm punches, look at his feet, they are not set properly, look at his waist, where's the rotation, look at his shoulders, there's no follow through, he's an arm puncher.

Washington isn't the only big super heavy who didn't have the power to match his size. Valuev for a 300lbs monster didn't hit as hard as he should, same with Miller how can a guy that heavy not hit hard. It's more obvious to see with Miller because of his size, he can't get leverage in shots because his size prevents him doing so. Jameel Mcline was another 260lbs man mountain but got taken the distance often against ordinary fighters, having mass means nothing if you can't put it all together to deliver than mass into a punch.

You can show a fighter how he should throw a punch, but whether they can actually execute it properly is another matter.

Kownacki has just fought ONE power puncher in Martin so a claim of EXTRAORDINARY chin is unproven.

Kownacki is 6'3 far from a Cruiser weight of his genetics of a huge guy and probably walks around near 280 if he wasn't boxing or more.,not so thinking hes a CW.

miller himself is untested in boxing but seen him rattled actually by Washington walking into shots but he took allot more then Kownacki.

If you go to my breakdown it explains why kownacki would have an easier time with Washington.

    the two factors were.

1.Different trainers going intoa big fight.

    2. Miller fought Washington and could relay advise as they are sparring partners which is always an advantage.

I still believe Nathan Gorman a similar fighter like Kownacki is better. I expected a Ud win or late stoppage ,what that fight showed me is Washington fought terrible game plan and one would question what he was training for this fight knowing hes a long range fighter ??lol
