i'm fickle...i'll say that from the off.
i was at prizefighter the other night, and was shouting on joe rae..but yet, i have serious issues with the whole format.

i do think it gives great exposure to boxers who may not get it otherwise and its created domestic stars, so, in that way it has it's good points.

but..i'm kinda surprised how many people love the format, and, far as i can see, how few have any issues with it.

for me it's taking the skill and art away from pro boxing as much as it can.....also, i don't think these results should end up on professional records.....it would never have happened years ago i don't think, far as i know there used to be a rule that you could only have one professional fight inside a week.....am i right saying that??

it's a bad accident waiting to happen too i think....take the welterweight one where ted bami fought micheal lomax...those two walked across the ring to meet each other one with a broken nose and other wih stitches in his head from what i remember...thats not a fair fight...if i want to see two high class professional boxers fight like them (and i consider them high class at british level) i'd like to see a fair fight, one where there can be no excuses afterwards.
why i say its a bad accident waiting to happen...imagine this scenario...a middleweight or above weight one where one guy in the final cruises through with first round wins...other guy was last man to fight, he struggled through, nearly getting stopped in second fight, but won on points, but has only had 15 minutes rest period...he is fooked....fight starts, he's not recovered right from the last fight...gets sparked..and with the combination of tiredness and a bad k.o. well, you know

now, next thing..how can a boxer possibly train for seven different opponents?...as a professional, if you box a southpaw...i imagine..you train for a southpaw......if a boxer hasn't done this, as say there was only one southpaw in his prizefighter, and sods law he finds himself in the final against the southpaw, having never fought one and not trained for one...isn't he at a massive disadvantage...he loses, but who's to say he wouldn't have won had he trained for a southpaw and sparred southpaws....and this is on his pro record forever....is that fair ?

joe rae was at a huge disadvantage the other night, he fought a superb first fight, where he was an underdog, and won, but had a very short time to rest compared to his opponent in the second fight...very short time period...he was obviously the more tired of the two in that fight...but who's to say he wouldn't have beaten his opponent (jj mcdonagh) if they had met in the first fight..or a non-prizefighter bout...but yet he will always have this loss to him on his record now...this is clearly a situation where a fight is not fair, one has a definite advantage..as a boxing fan i want to see them at their best against each other and know whoever won was the better, not like this.

saying all that i was there, bought me ticket, so supported it and fed to the success of it...so, i'm fickle....and may not have worded this post well...and don't expect many to agree...but i know what i mean.....its taking the circus 'come and box a round with the circus strongman' scenario to a professional boxing ring...i think it's amazing how it's been allowed to happen, and how sucessful it's been...and how so little of boxing fans seem to have any issues with it.

    anyway...rant over....doug out.

i agree with the fact that it shouldnt appear on pro records. someone losing there unbeaten 0 due to a lottery like prizefighter, all its good for is exposure and one of the fighters get the 32 grand or whatever. give me a 12 round fight though instead any day of the week.

Not a huge fan of Prizefighter myself as boxing skills are often neglected and the fact the contests appear on your record is wrong. It does offer exposure to guys who otherwise would not be anywhere near the limelight and of course there is the 32 grand to play for. Too many fighters imo have been given undeserved title shots though off the back of the tournament.

yes....i should have added that about title shots on the back of it....willie casey was lucky not to get killed when they threw him in with rigeondeaux...although he won fights after prizefighter before that fight, would he have got it without the prizefight victory?

It should be said though, that all the fighters know what they are signing up for. Willie Casey wasn't forced to fight Rigondeaux. He probably agreed to do it because either he fancied his chances, or the money was good enough.

If you go into Prizefighter with an unbeaten record, you're putting it on the line. Some good boxers (as opposed to brawlers and punchers) have won prizefighters.

I'm not a massive fan of the tournament format, and I'd have a 12 rounder anyday, but it obviously appeals to somebody, and fighters are desperate to get in the draw.

Who cares about the 0... just have proper fights - if you lose under those circumstances and feel you can win over six then rematch over six. All this 0 stuff is nonsense if you ask me - no disrespect steelcity

i dunno jeff....you're not wrong but not completely right either i think...would a 'lucky' winner of prizefighter want a rematch, already having got the 'w' on his record and if past winners are anything to go by, will normally be looking towards bigger fights on the back of it, not rematches from it
its not so much about the '0' but more the who really is the better from any bout in it

We got to see audley at world level because of prizefighter! What you talkin bout!?

No seriously the only prizefighter I would watch is the heavyweights, not for the skills or anything just to see big guys knock **** out of each other.

But yeah I wouldn't miss it if it was gone.

It's not just the format of fighting 3 fights a night with the chance of getting injured in the 1st fight already (Herbie Hide anyone?), or having a much harder path to the final as your opponent. But also the part of it being 3x3 fights.

A fighter who needs 2 rounds to figure out his opponent is f*cked.
Scoring is often appalling, and with only 3 rounds you get many 28-29/30-27/28-29 type scores. (with the 30-27 being the correct one)
Faders can make a name for themselves. I can already see Kevin Ferguson fighting and winning a international HW version :patsch
Fighters need to go all out from the first bell.

And there are many more reasons why this shouldn't count on pro records.
It's nice to watch, but not to be taken too seriously.

I personally like the fact to win you cant settle you have to be right out of the gate as its only 3 rounds. These fighters who join it know what they are doing and if they want to risk there record on these type of fights then why not?
