Kelly Pavlik is a good fighter. He has power in both hands, but he has never fought a smart MW like Hopkins. It is too bad Hop is not in his prime, but he is still a special athlete. He has ring smarts. He will know that Kelly is easy to hit, but he will have to pull the trigger when Pav does open up. Hop if he can land big rights, and utilize his defense for 12 rounds, and not get tired, he has a very good chance to beat Pav. I like those chances, and that's why I'm picking Hop in this fight. An occassional hard jab by Hop would also be a plus, but I think Hop will only use it at certain times so he can can conserve his energy.

Pav stands too straight up, and Hop can come over the top with his own big right. The fact that both are orthodoz fighters favors Hop. Hop will be able to hold Pav when he gets too close. Making Pav miss will be they key to victory. Nobody has been able to land on Hop clean, and when they did, he showed his great chin also. I expect Hop to give Pav a boxing lesson. Hop UD in 12.

Jones is a fighter who put his body through hell. At lightheavy, as he got older, in the Gonzalez fight, he started to feel that those guys were catching up to his speed advantage. He told merk that Gonzalez was strong. Roy's dreams of winning a heavy belt, albeit not Lennox's belt was still a great achievement against a bigger man. He gained 25 lbs of muscle, and beat a good heavy in Ruiz. When roy came down to fight Tarver, he was never the same fighter.

Tarver being a southpaw with power gave Jones and his depleted body hell. Losing the weight gave Jones more hell than Tarver's punches. We all know Jones would lose to Tarver and Johnson by ko. We all figured Jones was done. Now I take a look at Calzaghe, and what does he offer. He offers great defense, slick boxing, and body punching. this style fits into the type of fight Jones loves. Jones loves to stay on the ropes, have a guy try to work him over, and counter effectively. This is Jones now, not when he was the offensive wizard. Cal is not a big puncher, but he is a two fisted puncher meaning all of his punches land with the same effect. Cal doesn't specialize in any punch, so Jones doesn't have too much to worry about in terms of power.

Jones has to somehow make Cal attack him...make Cal the aggressor. Cal loves to feitn, and so did Jones. Notice I says "did". Jones has to get back to his feints in this fight. Cal's game is also being a counter puncher, only he can be moving forward and counter punch which is what makes him great. Jones has to attack Cal when Cal jabs his way in. On the ropes, Jones will be ok. He can land hard shots, rest, and work Cal's body with the left hook. Jones still has some speed, but he rests a lot more. The key to this fight is getting an early lead and making Cal the follower/attacker, so that Jones cna do what he does best. Both are incrdedible counter punchers and can attack when they need to. Jones has a better selection of punches than Cal that he can use...even at age 39. I expect Jones to turn Cal into the aggressor, and Jones will use the uppercut, left to the body, defense, and win a unanimous decision.

Yes I'm rooting for these two old legends. Their time is up, but this is their last big fights, and I expect both legends to surprise one more time. Jones UD in 12.

Very good post. I'm going to be rooting for both Hopkins and Jones here. For Hopkins his chances are way bigger to win than Jones to be honest, he has an opponent who is one-dimensional, very predictable and doesn't have much speed. Work-rate is what will trouble Hopkins on the scorecards and that includes Pavlik's power punch, Pavlik needs to land and land a lot to serious put Hopkins in a dangerous position of getting knocked down or seriously hurt and with the way Pavlik throws I just can't see Pavlik being a tough opponent to handle. The way he's predictable will be too easy for Hopkins to figure out, Pavlik is a one hand fighter, his right hand is his main weapon and is jab is usually there to set up opponents with that right hand, if Hopkins was able to make Tarver and Calzaghe miss who are more way more skilled than Pavlik miss and miss a lot then I can't see Hopkins having trouble here unless of course he's dead tired by the 4th and can't afford to move a lot as he usually does, which is also possible.

For Jones, this is a tough one again. Now that the fight is close I've been looking more and more into it. Used to say that Jones has no chance at all and Calzaghe will win easily. I think Jones has a decent chance and as a fan of his I'll be rooting for him of course and hoping he pulls it off. It's all about work-rate here too, Calzaghe is extremely fast, throws punches in bunches from odd angles and constantly active, that could spell doom for an old Jones who doesn't have the stamina or legs to keep up many punches for 12 full rounds. Still Jones of course has his speed, which won't be there for long but will be affective while it lasts and power advantage.

In conclusion, both fights are good and I'm looking forward to them. I think I can fairly say in this thread that all my hate for Calzaghe in the past because of the Lacy win is officially burried, I have full respect for the man, he's still around and still trying to bring us the biggest fights out there and I'd rather bury that hate and appreciate him than feel sorry for the rubbish I said about him when he's no longer around. It's enough to say that he's possibly one of the greatest fighters to come out from England/Wales ever and that can't be denied or disrespected unless I'm being delusional which I admit I was because he beat a certain favorite of mine in Lacy.

Well, it's always good to hope that it happens. The funny thing is people are siding with the young guys over the old guys lol. I thought it would be the other way around:rofl

Why are you trying to ruin a potential Pavlik/Slappy match up from me? :blood

I would rather see Pavlik fight Abraham instead of Calzaghe.

I agree with a couple of your points, Nallege, but why is it necessary to put your name in the thread title? Everyone can see that it's you making the post.
