Yeah. I tried to use philly shell when I started sparring. It worked against friends and other guys who dosent know how to box but In competive boxing I realized in first sparring session that it aint going to work.
Believe me, I know it won't work for a beginner. After a few years of training, I'll probably try it, but for now, it's the high guard for me.
Listen, I know it's obviously stupid to use Philly Shell as a beginner, which is why I won't, however, I strongly disagree with the notion that you have to have "natural talent" or "Floyd-like reflexes" in order to perform the Philly Shell proficiently. That's just stupid, and it discounts all the hard work that a guy like Floyd puts in the gym working on his defense. Like I said, I probably won't even attempt it until after a couple of years, but practice makes perfect, you don't need to be an athletic freak.
To be fair, my actual post didn't say that, I picked notable examples in James Toney, and Bernard Hopkins, who use the shell but are not amazingly athletically gifted.
I know, I was just saying in general, because a lot of people seem to think that, and when they say that, I also point to B-Hop and Toney.
You do need natural talent to use it, it's low percentage and designed for a counter puncher. To be a counter puncher you need fast reflexes, even Floyd gets hit. It's not really a pure defense so much, it's used to lure the opponent onto punches. Unless you have a fast, counter punching style you'll get nothing out of it apart from a beating. You're a southpaw as well so it's not going to be effective against orthodox fighters, which means most fighters.
Btw why have you decided to use Philly shell if possible? Do you want to imitate some of your favorite fighters?
Most people who use the Philly shell are. You more or less have to be, the only guy I can think of who uses it and isn't is Paul McCloskey and he just ends up looking awkward.
You look like Vinny from Jersey Shore. Also can you make another video showing your offensive skills? Would be good to watch.
:-( @Antsu I haven't tried it yet, but years down the line, I just want to experiment with it, because it intrigues me. @lefty I still disagree. I may not know a lot about boxing, but the "natural talent" **** people spew around is BS. Like I said, it discounts all the hard work people like Floyd put into working on their defense. You think when he started off, he just walked in and was as good as he is today? Also, you seem to have this idea that you can't improve your reflexes and mobility? Let me guess, you can't improve your speed, power, or strength either?
