:-( Wow. So the 230lb. tub of goo in the Young fight is gonna handle Marciano and Louis? Tell you what, I'd take the Louis of 48 or the Marciano of 55 over the Ali of 71 anyday.
Take your point of view, put it on th shelf. I really do appreciated the fact you continue to argue..... perhaps its me.. stubborn?? Reluctlent to compromise?? However the story, your a good sport. Keep posting.
Marciano would have beating Ali in 77 also imo. That Ali was struggle with the likes of Shavers, Young, and Inoki lol. Ali was just too far past it by 77 to relly beat a ATG like Louis or Marciano, add in Dempsey, Johnson, and others also. Ali lost his speed, his movement, the wits that made him great. Sure Ali a few years back would make it a better effort, but by 77, Ali was ready to be taking.
Dempsey........... read my previous posts...... I consider Marcianos first genuine chance at Ali being prior to '64... or post '77. Likely, post '77...... Inioki? What the?... That was a foolish, immitation of nothingness.
I think Marciano's best shot is during Ali's comeback, 1971-77 imo. I give Marciano a good shot vs 1960's Ali also. But more so vs 1970's Ali because of Ali's lost of speed. But now the down side here is Ali build up his strenght, and that would be the type of fight Marciano would loved. I dont think the rope a dope and tactics like that would work with Marciano.
You are correct, in fact Joe Frazier said the 3 fighters he is sure would have beaten Ali was Louis and Marciano and himself...he said Ali could never try the rope a dope with Marciano and he could not win a fight running vs either man, like he could not against a prime Joe Frazier...Frazier said Louis and Marciano were the top 2 and he was after them in his prime.....Ali was a great guy but some of the posters here think he could outrun a speeding bullet...Ali had great fight vs Foreman and Liston but had his trouble with the busier guys...even Patterson (hurt) landed well, but Young (beat him) Norton, Frazier(pressure) Cooper( quick hook)....A lot of Ali's opponents had no plans of winning...he was great but not inhuman like a lot of posters here believe.
Answer me one simple question, if you would be so kind? Who do you outright favour over Marciano? ( I did ask Rockyjim this but he ran away from answering )
The scores at the time of the KO were 4-7,5-7,4-8 in other words Marciano needed a ko to win. Marciano never fought a young, big, class heavyweight, with the speed , boxing ability ,and size of Ali.
You cite the 21 years old 19 fight Ali's contest with Marciano to make your case. How about if we use the 26 years old, 21fight Marciano's first fight with 177lbs Ted Lowry to make Ali's case? Here is a report of that fight. Michael J. Thomas of the Providence Journal wrote, "Marciano did not win the fight. This reporter gave it to Lowry, six rounds to four.” The crowd of 3,696 booed the decision and some wondered if Lowry had thrown the fight. "There were some questions as to whether Lowry, who had come close to knocking out Marciano in the second, third and fourth rounds, deliberately bogged down in his attack after the fourth stanza," Thomas wrote. "Lowry stopped using his uppercut after the fourth. He went into a shell and only occasionally landed power shots. He seemed to be carrying Marciano." In his book Rocky Marciano: The Rock of His Times, Russell Sullivan wrote the following: "It was Lowry, not Marciano, who was on the verge of scoring an early knockout, stinging Marciano with two terrific rights in the first round and then rocking him with two mighty uppercuts in the second. By the fourth, a staggered Marciano seemed just one punch away from being knocked out. But then, inexplicably, Lowry stopped fighting and retreated into a shell despite warnings from the referee to open up and a cascade of boos from the crowd. To many, it appeared that Lowry was deliberately carrying Marciano. Was foul play afoot? Was Lowry getting paid to lose? Or was he merely tiring? Whatever the reason, a revived Marciano managed to rally in the late rounds even though many of his punches missed their mark or lacked force. On the basis of his aggressiveness and constant punching, Marciano won a unanimous decision from the judges. Most observers felt, however, that Lowry should have won." Lowry, who earned $2,500 for the fight, denied he threw the fight. "I beat Rocky that night and that’s it," he said. "He changed his strategy in the fifth round and made a fight of it, but I won two of the last six rounds after winning the first four. It was a hometown decision." Here is another Marciano fight in which opinions were divided as to who won. 26 years old Marciano ,having his 31st fight, wins a split decision from 187lbs Roland Lastarza. Jessie Abramson of the New York Daily Herald called the decision "paper thin and exceedingly odd." According to newspaper reports, it was condemned around ringside as a miscarriage of justice. A 4th round knockdown won the fight for Marciano, the scores were 5-5,5-4 ,4-5. That's two undersized heavyweights,[one was really a light heavy], that lost very close decisions to a Marciano who was more experienced and 5 years older than the young Ali who fought Cooper. Neither could box like Ali, neither had his speed, size, durability, or reach. Marciano was cut in all his major fights and imminent danger of being stopped in 2 of them, against Keene Simmons and Ezzard Charles in their second fight. Just balancing things up. Can you show a primary source for the Archie Moore quote please? The photo below will give you some idea of the size disparity we are talking about here. This content is protected
Floyd never hurt Ali and a fat disinterested past it Ali won a U dec over Young.21 years old Ali was playing to the crowd when Cooper caught him , he cleaned his clock in the very next round. Some of Marciano's fans believe he could defy the laws of physics.
