I just want to let you know about what I think of the controversy surrounding the first Bute/Andrade fight... if you can let me know what you think about that, it will be much appreciated. I don't think Andrade got robbed by the referee. I think he got robbed when Bute was stumbling from post to post when there was 30 seconds or so left in the fight. Andrade was coming in like a train and Bute was not defending himself anymore. What about the "you should protect yourself at all time"? Clearly, Bute was not able to protect himself anymore. While I was watching the fight, I was thinking that if the fight would have been anywhere else than MTL, the fight would have been stopped before Bute went down. I don't think the referee gave him some extra time while he was down, but I think he let him go while Bute was clearly not able to defend himself anymore. Please let me know what you think about this... And no insulting post, I'm not a noob. I'm living near MTL, but I am not biased in any way.
bute did everything he could in that last round to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...he was completely spent
I didn't have a big problem with the ending. The ref told Andrade to go to a particular corner and he didn't go to that corner. That gave Butte extra time and he survived. Andrade should not have put himself in that position. BTW, I also did not have a problem with the ending of Chavez-Taylor I.
Steve Smoger is widely regarded as the best ref in the sport, and I doubt if he would have stopped that fight. The rules say in the event of a knock down the standing fighter must go to a neutral corner and stay there while the ref administers an 8 count to the fallen fighter. If you come out of the corner, the ref stops counting. The ref did not give Bute extra time. Andrade gave Bute extra time by not staying in the damn corner.
The ref could have stopped the fight 30 seconds before the end. It was upon his judgment. Marlon Wright is a former boxer himself. What do you expect him to do? Bute was nearly able to stand but Andrade was not able to land a shot on him. His punches had nothing on them. Everytime Andrade was coming, Bute was still able to clinch, although not firmly. Is a boxer in danger if he doesn't receive anything? Bute was moving like a drunk guy but moving, and that's part of defending yourself. If you don't move and get hit by flush hits, you're in danger. If you manage by any way to avoid being hit, you protect yourself. Bute received one or two punches in the 30 last seconds, including the final one. So yes, some refs would have stopped the fight. But many others, anywhere around the world, would have done the same thing as Wright. This is not so clear as people have pretended in the preview posts.
Bute should have taken a knee with about 10 seconds to go and that would have been it,gets up at 8 and the fight is over.
I understand your valid point of view but Bute was 100% conscious on his feet, he was dead tired physically, not stunned or shaky because of particular punches....that's the subtle reasoning behind letting him keep on fighting after dominating 11 rounds and being the champ.
Bute wasn't as all over the place as Pavlik in the second round of his first fight against Taylor in my opinion. I don't see why Marlon Wright should have stopped the Bute-Andrade bout.
The way it went down, Bute getting the UD was the correct decision. Andrade was on the verge of stopping him, but he started 30 seconds too late. That's unfortunate for Andrade, not a criminal ending or a gifted win for Bute.
Thats pretty well it. Saved by the Reff. I thought that the Reff was about to help him to his feet, if he didnt get up by himself.
I don't have a problem with how the ref handled the last few seconds of the fight because if he would have counted while Bute was down, Bute would have made it anyway. I think he got up at 8 or 9 and he didn't need to point at Andrade to get into his corner. I do have a problem with how the ref was reffing when Bute was chicken dancing around the ring, when Andrade was trying to get inside the ref was just pushing them away.
