I don't know a whole lot about the middle weight devision, and haven't spent a lot of time researching it, but I've compiled a top 10 list of who I think were the best. Feel free to offer your opinions. Harry Greb Marvin Hagler Sugar Ray Robinson Bob Fitzsimmons Stanley Ketchel Sam Langford Jack Dempsey Tommy Ryan Emile Griffith Jake La Motta
I'm hoping you just forgot Carlos Monzon. I'm guessing the absence of Bernard Hopkins is due to him still being active. Tommy Ryan was better as a welterweight than middleweight really, although the same can be said of others; except Ryan's middleweight credentials aren't on the same level as Robinson's or Griffith's. I never place Stanley Ketchel very highly at all; he scrapes the top fifteen if he's lucky, and that's on historical importance. Never impressed me enough on film for me to overlook his lacking accomplishments, whereas someone like Marcel Cerdan did just that; didn't achieve much to get in the top ten, but looked formidable enough to make me consider such a placement. Dick Tiger is a middleweight worth researching, so is Mickey Walker.
I disagree. Aside from his sexuality, he had some very good wins under his belt. His middleweight record was patchy, but so was his career at welterweight, and he did have these scalps: Nino Benvenuti Dick Tiger x2 Joey Archer x2 Bennie Briscoe Plus various other contenders such as Doyle Baird and Kitten Hayward. Griffith's accomplishments are fair, but it was his ability at his best that pushes him into a class above the likes of Tony Zale.
You silly sausage. I rate Griffith at number ten. Dick Tiger, Joey Giardello and Nino Benvenuti are somewhere above him.
No inconsistency... Giardello had some good wins that helps his case, but yes, it's his head-to-head ability which nudges him up there. I feel he finally got his chance once he was past his prime - the Giardello of the mid '50s, when he wasn't painting the town red, was lithe, mean and strong, unlike the harrowed '60s version who was just smart enough to win. I have to rate these middleweights on everything combined. Hagler, Monzon, Hopkins, Greb, Robinson, Tiger, Giardello, Griffith, Benvenuti, Fullmer... Perhaps those are my top ten, though more deliberation is needed.
Who the **** did nonpariel and tommy ryan even beat at 160, i swear to god, the 160 division is one in which the old timers r so ****in overrated and yet people still put them in the top 10. Michael nunn beat like 3 or 4 very good fighters at this weight class, you guys say he isnt even top 20, when most of you dont even know who tommy ryan or nonpariel even beat in the first place.
Or maybe it's due to him only being champ for so long because the best fighter in the division jumped to 168? :yep Really no excuse for that one. :huh
You're up early, **** the bed? Or are you just excited about the big game? And I don't mean the rugby.
