Only rating Champions ,and in no order. Robinson Monzon Greb Hagler Walker Ketchel Jones Jnr Tiger Giardello Lamotta.
Better how? Papke was a notch bellow the champion in ability but not by much. There was not a Papke for Monzon to fight to really bring out the best in him at his peak. Not his fault of course. What about Ketchels wins over O'Brien and Flyn? That would be like Monzon beating Bob Foster twice and then steping up to heavyweight and knocking out Oscar Bonavena.
You're talking out of your ass, how can you all of a sudden make a claim that papke is better than vito antuofermo, alan minter and rodrigo valdez, cuz they fought in your favourtie era? I dont even know why youre comparing o'brien with foster since foster has the better legacy from the viewpoint of a sane human being. Hagler and Monzon beat far more ranked fighters than ketchel could dream of and thats why they get ranked higher, ur boy padded his record on cops and bums.
I always had Ryan in my ratings, he fought some good fighters of the era including Kid McCoy(I rate High but LTHY) who he drew with and KO'd Jack NONP Dempsey in 3, he beat Mysterious Billy Smith, drew with lightheavy/heavy Jack Root. Ketchel was a tough guy drew with Sam langford, dropped Hvywt Champ J.Johnson, better of the wars wars with Papke...Hagler was great but struggled a bit with older, fatter Duran, lost to Leonard....Monzon did not look great against old Griffith and Briscoe...makes me wonder, Ryan I may have too high but I try to balance it out with some of the older guys that were really respected by the experts, Fleicher loved Ryan
Sure. Then again he dosnt look as good on film as Philadelphia Jack O'Brien and he still beat him twice.
I think part of that has to do with the filmed fights available are supposed to be some of his worst showings. Someone said about his fight with Papke that we can watch today that they "lookd like two old ladies", and the other one, he was fighting Jack Johnson.
Fair points there. I'd probably be less willing to credit him if he was fighting sub par opponents, but if he looked real impressive doing it, like Foster and Holmes often did, and like Tito did in his destruction of Joppy, it would be hard not to give him credit for a middleweight run.
