Im just watched this fight for the first time. I had only seen a few Joe C and Kessler fights, so I was doing my homework for saturday's big bout and I came across Calzaghe vs. Sheika. I had never seen this fight before, so I sit down to take a look. And what I saw was this : Calzaghe getting outboxed before a terribly early stoppage. Calzaghe was head butting him the whole fight, and never really landed any punches of consequence until the 5th. Sheika was landing the cleaner, more effective punches, and was making Joe Miss quite a bit, and when Joe did land, the punches looked more like (no bull****) slaps. Sheika dropped all his defense in the 5th, because the cut (caused by Joe C's headbutts) was so bad he knew they were gonna stop it. Calzaghe landed some bombs but Sheika was firing back and hitting Joe at the time of the stoppage. I say all this to say that Joe can obviously fight, but the outcomes to some of his fights (the Manfredo debacle as well) are dubious at best. :deal
Been a while since I watched that fight, but come on man, a bloke who has a huge cut on his face dropping his defence because he knew they were going to stop it? Wouldn't the more sensible and logical thing be to defend yourself until they stop it? Drop your offence, yes, but your defence?
He was going for the KO because the ref was looking at him very closely. Calzaghe opened another cut with his head in the 5th. Both were bleeding badly, so Sheika tried to stop Joe, getting tagged in the process. Sheika was hurt but he was hitting Joe at the time of the stoppage.
Premature. You don't stop a fight when both guys are punching. Sheika was not wobbled badly nor did he show any obvious signs of being seriously hurt. Heck even when the ref stepped in he was practically punching. Its like Manfredo in that it was probablly going that way but you still can;t just stop it like that.
Like I said, it's been a while since I watched this fight, but FFS, Sheika was bleeding like a stuck pig, and one of his eyes was ****ed up badly. The ref stopped it because Sheika could have suffered permanent damage. It was not premature.
These cuts were due to his Joe C's constant headbutting, which he resorted too because he the fight was not really going his way. He was frustrated. The ref did not warn him ONCE for this. I say bull****. :-(
I shall watch the fight again this weekend - I do not recall Calzaghe in particular being guilty of headbutting - I do recall a lot of heads together while Sheika was on the ropes, but if there was any foul play I think they were both guilty of it, and Sheika just came off second best. Regardless, the fight was stopped because Sheika was so badly cut.
Sheika was getting his ass handed to him on a silver platter. That you think that constitutes Calzaghe getting outboxed is utterly beyond belief.atsch
Premature yes, Calzaghe getting totally outboxed...:think What fight was you watching... Calzaghe was doing a number on Sheika.
You are slowly developing into a nuthugging fanboy. Your rage towards danes and Kessler makes you type stupid things like this. "Manfredo wasnt hurt but I could se that he was about to get hurt, which clearly justifies stopping the fight. The ref could have stopped it 2 seconds into the first round and it would still be a perfect stoppage." Hey- we dont want fighters to get hit and hurt, do we? Jeez:blood
haha - Calzaghe was up on all three judges cards by at least 2 rounds. I had Calzaghe up at that point also. Outboxed?? They must term that differently where you live! Sure, Sheika got through with a couple of nice power punches but they hardly touched Joe. This was also around the time of Joe's lacklustre performances. In the 5th, Calzaghe stood toe to toe and Sheika was missed wildly whilst getting nailed himself. Sheika kept taking BIG shots square in his face. The stoppage was maybe 15 seconds early but saved Omar from a beating.
