Holyfield defeated a good version of Tyson. Now, I am a fan of Tyson, but, to be fair, Tyson wasn't "washed up" in 1996. Before the Holyfield fight, he was arguably the best heavyweight in the world. And even after, he still was arguably a top 5 heavyweight in the world. However, it still wasn't the Tyson of 1986 that crippled the division. That was the best version of Tyson. Kind of how 1971 Ali was a good version of Ali, but the 1967 Ali was the best version. So, we can't go to one extreme and say Mike Tyson was washed up in 1996, on the other hand, we can't go to the other extreme and pretend that Holyfield defeated the best version of Tyson. And, had Tyson beaten Holyfield in 1996, I'd be saying the same thing. It would have been a good win over a good version of Holyfield, but not the same thing as having defeated a 1991 Holyfield. All in all, a 1996 Mike Tyson would have been a good win for the resume of any heavyweight champion as a 1996 Mike Tyson still had the capability of defeating any heavyweight champion, but that capability wasn't as high as the 86- 88 in optimal shape Mike Tyson.
I don't blame Tyson for biting Holyfield's ear as Holyfield kept head butting Tyson over and over again and on purpose.................the referee should have warned Holyfield, but never did............
Holyfield beat Tyson soundly in the first fight, the second fight was nothing more than a money grab that went wrong. Holyfield out boxed Tyson real bad and he was not afraid of his reputation. Can we say that that was the best version of Holyfield seeing that he was 3x bigger by the time he fought Tyson? Holyfield was still my pick for Fighter of the Decade in the 90s over Roy Jones but we all know that that bias title is for HBO fighters only.
Holyfield was strong enough to tie up and muscle Tyson on the inside. Unlike most Tyson opponents who were taller, slower and leave big target chins in the air. Holy tug his chin pretty well and fighting with full confidence. He will be tough outing for any version of Tyson.
Tyson was terrified of Holyfield and in complete awe of him going back to the amateurs. Tyson never believed he could ever beat Holyfield. This factor would have influenced the outcome whenever they fought.
They were both good but past prime, Evander moreso, which is why he was such an underdog. People complain about Tyson missing a few punches against a guy who was clowning Bowe, and ignore Evander struggling with Bobby Czyz.
holyfield fought a couple of versions of Tyson they fought at the olympic trials with holyfield getting the knod to continue and Tyson going pro 1986 tyson whew i dont know, but the real deal is was still the real deal. And the 1996 version holyfield won
Holy is the real deal, no flaws imo, but you aint putting him ahead of prime Jones jnr. Jnr mugged good fighters with ease.
Personally, I think prime Tyson beats prime Holyfield. Especially with a fair ref that has no tolerance for head butts. Prime Lewis beats either one though.
I don't know mate, Holyfield was one of the most complete champs ever for me. I think he beats all but the super heavys...Only my opinion though, I know some will laugh. With regards to Holy being a head butter, I quite agree. I'll turn a blind eye though against Tyson, he was all elbows at times with several opponents Tyson, trying to break Bothas arm because he couldn't deal with him
Their fights were on even terms, both Holyfield and Tyson were past prime, Tyson was farther removed. I think Tyson of 87-89 would've been hell for the Holyfield of 88-90. He (Holy) was still smallish, and I don't think he would've been able to absorb those shots. Plus Tyson still fired in combination back then and wasn't just a head hunter.
