Believe you me, I got nothing but respect for Cotto's ability and heart. I mention heart because to me, it seems he knows exactly what he's in for, but he will still go in WANTING to change his fate and win.
It may seem like I'm discrediting his efforts and ignoring the positive aspects of his style. And to be honest, I can't even explain what I see in my head when I put those two together in a ring.
But Mayweather sees it too and at this point, he's taking advantage of the situation and will even make a strong point of the outcome.
I hope you're right though. You make the stronger, more realistic points rather than just put your feelings out there .. like some people

Aye, Cotto's punch variation has to be mixed up, not just round by round, but also during the round.

Mayweather somehow has a great way of making his opponent become predictable and throw the same punches...in turn, he can avoid said punches, and throw the shots he wants to throw. I've only just properly noticed this recently, Mayweather's opponents have little success in throwing say a particular combination, he will make them miss or block every punch. His opponent will then not try that combination, or a number of punches in that combination again. It's like he prepares for their best, and then prepares for what they turn to as "comfort" punches (the punches they rely on). It's hard to explain

He's a master at taking away an opponent's most successful punches, and then defending everything else that comes after, with his opponent desperate in his unpreparedness to adapt or change gears.

What Floyd can do to Cotto(e)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzvFOYLIYPs#t=20m50s

antonio magarito(e) feinted. Cotto(e) realized it was a feint. margo(e) does the same thing and Cotto(e) thinks a jab is coming this time. Cotto(e) reacts by swatting his right hand down as to parry what he believed was to be an upcoming jab. margo(e) instead slightly loops a left hand to get around Cotto(e)'s attempted parry and land a hook.

Floyd does something very similar to what I described above below.

He forced the same reaction Cotto(e) had out of Juan, so Juan exposes himself with a swat parry at an incorrectly anticipated jab. Floyd then loops his left hand around to hook.

    Great thread, B! :good

Here's how Cotto can win rounds against Mayweather, imo.

    1. Jab consistently. It's tougher for Mayweather to counter two or three jabs thrown in succession than a single one thrown toward him, plus if he throws them in bunches, it increases the chance that one of them might land and send the crowd into a frenzy (don't think that the judges won't be affected by that).

    2. Show Mayweather that he's capable of defending the single shots early, and make damned certain that he tries to counter every shot that Mayweather misses. This Cotto's defensive ability isn't incredible, but it's tightened up under Diaz and in my opinion wasn't all that bad to begin with. He defends against punches reasonably well when boxing, but one of his main flaws has always been either an inability to take advantage of the opening created by this defense. But if he can throw something after making Mayweather miss (and he will make May miss at points), he gives PBF something to think about and once again depicts himself as being in the fight to the judges. If he concentrates solely on defense, he'll give the impression that PBF is controlling the action, and lose rounds as a result.

    3. Expect the uppercut. Mayweather's got a good one, and I would be willing to wager any amount of money that he's going to want to use it against the shorter man; especially if Cotto does a decent job of nullifying the more conventional straight right and right cross in the early going.

But in throwing that punch, he gives Cotto probably his best opportunity to land his money punch, the left hook. Cotto needs to anticipate that this punch will be coming at some point and he needs to throw the hook in response. His timing is good enough that he might be able to land the punch, and force Mayweather to take a step back and reset at the very least.

That, to me is what this fight is going to come down to. Which fighter will be capable of forcing their opponent to hit the reset button. Mayweather's proved himself a master at making his opponents take that step back and start thinking about what their next course of action will be. But I think Cotto has it in him to force Floyd to reset a couple of times as well, which is why I think he'll probably win at least three of four rounds in this contest.

I don't think Mayweather will allow him to take any more than four, mind you...But Cotto is a good enough and versatile enough fighter to take that amount for Floyd whether he likes it or not.

Should be fun to see how this plays out, at any rate...:good

Not sure if B answered, but I will. It's very possible that May could cut Cotto and take him out of his groove as a result; or possibly inflict enough sustained damage that swelling occurs.

But it's not something that he should bank on...and given that Cotto's trainer seems a no-nonsense type of guy who can keep Cotto focused on the matter at hand, it likely wouldn't be the automatic game breaker that it would have in an earlier time. I think Cotto's at the level mentally where he was prior to the first Margarito fight- and that version of Cotto was pretty good at dealing with adversity.

    How ya been, btw?:hi:

Great point; I think this is why coming out of a crouch is so important, as long as his head isn't past his knee, as Steward corrected. Otherwise, parries become sensitive to feints and begin set up.

I think Cotto should dig to the body abit.

His jab and bodywork will determine the *pace* of the fight and let him dictate how fast or slow the contest goes.

Your original point was :Speed kills, Cotto got destroyed by the last fast fighter he faced

That's where the Mayweather - Pacquaio comparison came in :patsch

I see why you're on so many ignore lists
