Calzaghe never outboxed Hopkins though. It was a close fight and i understand if people had it for Calzaghe, but he didn't do it by outboxing his man. I thought Hopkins won by a point personally.
obviously because americans had barely seen anything from him. Also i wouldnt call Calzaghe fights 'tough on the eyes'...but hey, its not like he cares- he was the one filling stadiums with 60,000+ in his home town. Cant be that bad on the eyes of his fans
he won by outworking him. And i had him winning a close but pretty comfortable decision. Only hopkins 'tactics' kept this fight close
I enjoyed the last couple years of Joe's career, he took on big fights and won, fair enough. One thing to raise and eyebrow though, he won his (vacant) title back in the late 90's and didn't face a current title holder in the ring until Lacy in 06'. That doesnt' get commented on much, but says something IMO.
They should have got in line to face him:good After all, we saw what happened when one 'tried' to gain an extra belt off him. Still unifying vs a legit world class opponent by outclassing him t he way he did i think says more than anything
I just don't know about the damaged boxer theory. It's not that fighters aren't ever hurt to the point that there not good anymore. How do you prove it? I've got to look at the fact that Taylor made short work of him. He looks to me like a failed, would be mini-Tyson. Strong but not skilled. Again, none of this means calzaghe is not an ATG.
Meh I think he has quite a good boxing style, not exactly a power puncher but he is a fast puncher with good movement. Hes no clincher. And while im here he's probably better stylistically than Mayweather, who can be very boring to watch even if he is great.
Yes, like shane mosley. I am not defending floyd for not fighting him now, I wish he would. However, I wouldn't be suprised if before they are both done they do fight. All I was saying is you are comparing an active fighter's resume to a guy who is likely not to ever be in a boxing ring again.
Great fighter, however he'll always be a "what could have been" type. So much potential but was ducked nd never got offered the mega fights. A prime Joe vs prime RJJ would have been one of the greats. I have the utmost respect for him though. He never bad mouthed anyone, left boxing (unlikely to return either which is rare for a great fighter) with his health and money. What more could you ask for?
Calzaghe is a great fighter who had superior speed and power. Due to his brittle hands, he had to depend on winning on points over the last few years which brought down his KO percentage but he still found a way to win and usually win big. If Joe was a jive talking scumbag from the East Coast USA then he would be a favorite with the kiddies here at ESB. Haters, go ahead and keep trashing somebody who doesn't even know you exist. See you tomorrow at Burger King.
When Kessler cleans out the SM show then Joes win over him will stand out even more.....you need to remember Kessler had a good fight and landed some great shots on Joe....but Joe fought smart and changed his plan and it worked a treat.
The comparison the TS is making of calzaghe resume vs mayweather's resume is pretty bad...IMO floyd faced the better opposition and its not even close..... Calzaghe is a talented fighter, but I have always said he is not ATG material, doesnt even crack the top 100 for me......look up on boxrec, he was fighting at a ice rink in '96 or '97 during his PRIME.....the man lived under a rock most of his carear.....his best win is kessler....I question the significance of his other notable wins....eubank(past prime),lacy(overrated),jones and hopkins(past it).....and broke with frank warren because he didnt want to face pavlik..... Talented fighter? Yes, Great UK fighter? Yes, ATG? No....
