While had to head is 40%, and here I rate Liston a little higher. In terms of opposition beaten Liston breezed through his, while Rocky really struggled to win some of his, and I'm talking about his not so famous match with LaStarza I, and his match vs Lowry. Where you factor is all in, I have Liston edging Marciano. 1 & 2. They are close enough. That is my reasoning, I understand why is not popular. Historical input is but 10% here.

I do think Marciano's contenders where a level over Liston's though. No way I rank Big Cat over the likes of Walcott or Charles or even Moore at heavyweight.

They were but I'm talking about the fights themselves. Rocky had to struggle, Liston did not. That's what I'm saying.

Double standards here, I think. What about Marty Marshall, Cleveland Williams, Bennie Thomas, Bert Whitehurst, Leotis Martin...? And I think Marciano's wins were over better opposition. H2H I might agree. I like a lot of the ratings to be fair but have a quibble with Hank Griffin, way too high IMO.

I said I will think about revisions and
Maybe Griffin is a bit high. Were would your rate him in the pioneer era? He's rated when he is by having excellent record ( getting the better on Jack Joshsnon win a win and a draw ) beating Harris " The black pearl " Martin, and drawing with known communities such as Murnore, Kenndey and Childs. He lost twice to Jeffries but overall I find his record of 28-4 to be very good and another of those losses was due to an injury, but I might have raked him a little high.

Liston ate up Whitherhurst and his loss to Matin although it ended badly, Liston was well past his shelf life for that one so that is factored in. As you said double standards, I try not to have them.

Thanks I see your standards; but I was confused because you have Charles high-& ranked twice!
So I guess that is a mistake, & you will choose just one era?
Because otherwise Ali & Louis at least would seem to deserve to be listed in consecutive eras, based upon both their records & title defenses.

I saw Corbett's record as the higher #s, still not a superb record for so few fights, but maybe he deserves that placement based upon competition.
Why did some guys fight at HW even when they had weight categories above 150 then-it was discretionary?

I can see the logic for Tunney, IF you count his LHW fights based upon that weight principle.
Sullivan deserved an "L", & might have fouled his way to victory other times?
I am interested in that Vitali article, either posted here or feel free to send it to me IF private!
I am unsure what you mean re: the single SHW points win since 1990-sometimes your wording is a 'lil confusing...

The FIRST Whitehurst fight was a "hard fought win" according to the St Louis Post-Dispatch of April 4th, no knockdowns in a clear ten round points win against a man who had won only 8 of his previous 22 fights. I'll give you the Martin one but even without it, that's a way more struggles than Rocky had. And I rate wins over Layne, LaStarza, Moore, Louis, Walcott and Charles over wins over Patterson, Machen, Folley and Williams, my take.
The Griffin rating I knock for the following reasons, his best win is over a green Jack Johnson or an even greener Frank Childs(if it even happened). He lost to Frank Russell(ko), a very green Jeffries, Ed Martin(ko), Bob Jones proved his superior, and draws with the limited Joe Kennedy a great resumee does not make,ok, but not great. For the life of me, I cant see any reason to rate him above Maher, Choynski, Hart, McCoy, and O’Brien who you rate reasonably. BTW Ed Martin should be in there too.

Okay sent and did you see Corbett real record?! It is a lot of fights. Far more than box rec! Based on my re-search Corbett was 59-0-3 with before fought Fitzsimmons! But some of the fights mentioned do not have news reviews aside from the names of who he meet to the point where Corbett was the better in 3 or 4 rounds. Some may be sparring matches. Thus the aren't all officially listed. Still only a master boxer in his times could do this and one day these fights man of these not listed fights could be listed be listed as " news wins " or flat out wins. Cool stuff, right?

I think Jeffries has several uncovered fights is CA,NM, AZ and MT, and the UK too. Boxing is full of hidden fights, especially pre 1920 stuff.

PS: I was talking about the super heavyweights , the very skilled champions not losing any matches on points besides one. Bowe, Lewis Klitschko, Klitschko, and Fury. Did you realize that? The ring magazine champions. It a separate thread and when it's ready I may post it here.

Thanks for the feedback. You do help sharpen up my message.

Why Povetkin over Usyk, Fury, Joshua, and Wilder? Povetkin never even held a legit heavyweight title.

Okay now that is the type of information I'm looking for! I will move Griffin's down, but he win over Johnson happened AFTER his 26th recored fight and there is record of Johnson being active as early as 1894 with a win over John Lee so he wasn't that green is 1901. It is big win and like I said in their draw Griffin was viewed as the better. This is Jack Johnson were are talking about here Griffin was the better in the trilogy. Griffin did in fact lose to Frank Russell. He retired with an injury through. Did you know that? But his losses are fewer on many cases the men listed. Check for a revision later.

I was talking about Liston filmed matches, not the one you refer too. Or do you have both Whitehurst matches? I may PM your with a valuable trade :) I say one thing there is no quit is the guy. Liston's win over Valdes, should rate. He demolished the man. Dejohn , Harris and Summeralin should rank too. I think Harris was ring magazine ranked. Highly at the time.

Very good I responded to your message!
Also Vitali seems like a great guy; & I like his personal & political integrity.

I knew Jeffries had more fights, not that Corbett had that many.
In the past you had Pitched Battles here about how good Johnson was or was not correct?
    Those have long subsided?

I have grown as a historian and poster. It is a never ending process until I reach the point if decline at that one is decades ahead, I hope. Let me put it to you this way I am better now than I was 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. I listen more now, not that I agree with all of the feedback. Yes-- the old posts for me are in the past. I will post new topics when time permits, for example you never seen Harry Greb in this light. A tease of a preview. Jaws well some of them might drop in wonderment and facts that you don't know about the man I think will offer a unique view and I never read them in forum. Not that I'm an expert on the Greb but just you wait. Research I have done. No-- there is still no confirmed film on the man boxing in the ring!

I really look forward to that! :Laie_22mini:

O us a favor & when you create the next meaningful historical revelations thread, describe your background, experience, any research or scholarship so we know who you are & see what you have done for many years.

It does not matter in an informal forum, but sometimes your grammar is a bit mangled-like check the second sentence of this post I am replying to.
Not that effects the Truth or quality of your claims, but it can be a bit confusing.
Although I know what you meant in that & most cases...

Nice work and thanks for sharing.

    Just curious.

Someone wrote that Tunney had 18 fights at HW - I’m not sure if that it is meant to be as simple as taking Tunney’s last 18 fights as being at HW - perhaps it is the explanation/intention. I’m not sure.

I understand your consideration of comparable weights and not just accepting the term HW in name only.

So how many fights do you deem Tunney to have had at HW and which fights have you included?

It seems at least several engagements with Greb might’ve been included - with Greb’s weights ranging from mid 160s to early 170s for his fights vs Tunney.

I understand that Johnson’s engagements with late 150 lbs Langford and late 160 lbs Burns can be considered comparable in terms of the literal weight of the opposition.

Anyway, if you could list Tunney’s acknowledged (as you see it) HW engagements it would help to properly compare it to that of Johnson’s.

No dramas if it’s too much to do - you’ve already put enormous work into it.

Russell knocked out Griffin, no injury involved.
