    Is 1994 a shade early for the coronation of Bernard Hopkins?

    By '94 Hopkins was still not yet a World Champion. In that year he beat Aquino, before getting decked in his draw with Mercado for a vacant strap.

    Is Jorge Fernando Castro more deserving at this point? In '94 in addition to keeping extremely busy against various road sweepers and cab drivers, he takes the WBA crown; beating John David Jackson, Alex Ramos and Reggie Johnson.

    The handover between the two being when X wins his IBF crown, and Castro dropping his title to Takehara?

    I had him beating mercado in the first fight.

    To be completely honest I put no great deal of thought into that year.

    In a way I know you're right. I just need to convince myself that what kalambay did in 88 was better than the hearns-barkley-duran series of fights.

    To be fair, I put a lot of effort in last night getting up to the robinson era with a degree of satisfaction.

    From the 60's i'm gonna review in more detail tonight (thankfully 20 years are taken up by 3 locks).

    I thought it better to get a preliminary list out but by tonight i'll have a more concrete picture.

    Does anyone have any thoughts on my murderer's row selection whilst zale was absent?

    Ok after further looking into the post Hagler era I'm fairly happy with what I have down.

    Johnson's claim is entirely subjective and those believeing he lost to castro might well have castro above him during this time frame. same with Toney as well, those thinking mike won might well put him to the top dog position.

    I think my final list is pretty fair though, altho it gets slightly messy with people leaving the division enbaling opther's to "inherit" top spot "for exaple jones moving up leaving mcclellan as the best man etc)

    But Castro still has the dramatic kayo of JD Jackson who in turn has the W over Johnson. Its tight between those three guys, but I don't think BHop warrants the nod over that little bunch prior to winning a version of the world title. Hopkins was probably deserving of the nod in Mercado 1, but even if given it, I'm not convinced its enough yet to put him clear of the field.

    And besides, Castro makes Duran more worthy of a mention...:lol:


    EDIT: Just seen your ammendments LUFC. Top work by the way mate. A final thought about the messy '94 - Reggie johnson didn't fight again until late '95 after the first Castro decision; in the meantime Castro takes a kayo of JD Jackson (who recently beat Johnson) while johnson sits on his hands. I think any contemporary reading of that would put Castro ahead of johnson while he's inactive (as we are looking particularly at the 'premiere' fighter rather than any sort of lineage)? Johnson -> Castro - > Hopkins possibly? Just a thought.

    I think johnson beat castro. I think hopkins beat mercado.

    I think though johnson was the natural man at the top based on his past efforts and current performances.

    When he left the division I think hopkins takes it then in 95 and keeps it until the taylor rematch.
