Good work! For me, Hagler was the No. 1 MW from 1978-86. Most rightfully feel he beat Antuofermo in his first title shot and there's little to suggest he would've lost the title from that point until his actual reign started.
I've not seen the fight but reports have suggested ant finished strong enough to win the fight outright. I'll look further into it.
Ok I've had another look at the post McClelland - pre Hopkins era (april 94- april 97) I don't think anyone really disputes that Johnsopn deserved to beat Jackson and Castro, he's a clear choice Once McClelland leaves the division and there shouldn't be too much dispute there. But then Johnson becomes inactive and in the meantime the man he'd narrowly beat (Castro) goes on and secures a brilliant victory against John D Jackson. So at this point the only active fighter of note is Castro and he's my pick for top dog. Bringing us into 95 this was a very close year now as some fighter's have valid claims: Hopkins rematches and kncoks out Mercardo; Johnson rematches and again, imo, is robbed against Castro so again goes inactive; Taylor knocks out a badly faded, imo, Julian Jackson. At this point Hopkins and Taylor both have strong claims with Hopkins getting the slight edge. After the year 97 (until then Holmes has a fairly decent claim to be above Hopkins) I don't think there's any doubt as to who the top dog is and snodgrasssssssssssss 2-1 Leeds!!!!!!!
