Nice list. No vincente Saldivar? He had quite the resume. Kid Chocolate a great great fighter appeared much better at 130 than 126lb.
Still holds some massive wins there...perhaps his greatest of all in Olivares. Add to that Hafey, Legra, and Kobayashi its fairly solid.
The reports out of New York that I've read had the fight plenty closer than that, Brockton, and each of them were basically unanimous in thinking Attell won both the 2nd and 7th rounds in that fight. NY Times: 6-3-1 Driscoll New York Sun: 7-2-1 Driscoll New York Evening World: 6-2-2 Driscoll New York Tribune: 6-2-2 Driscoll A couple of wire reports that I've read also saw the fight similiar in scoring to those at 5-3-2 (Washington Herald) and 6-3-1. I added up the reports on a round-by-round basis before, and if going by the majority, Driscoll was ahead 6-3-1 with Attell getting the 2nd and 7th by all, as well as a couple more votes for the advantage in the 6th round. Also, the NY Evening World had a poll of about 20 ringside observers printed along with their round-by-round, and Attell got nearly as many votes as the outright winner as did Driscoll. Something along the lines of 9 for Driscoll, 7 for Attell, and about 4 that had it even. There was no shutout in that fight from my information, my friend, albeit Driscoll did seemingly get the better of things.
Ive always read in every boxing book i ever owned that Driscoll shutout Attell. From the reports you indicate it seems Driscoll won a clear 7-8 rounds which is still a near shutout. I dont know what your trying to argue here for attell, but its blatant he got his ass kicked in this fight. Lets get some more reports on this fight to gauge properly. I will have to dig through a couple things.
I've read the same in books myself, Brockton, so I'm not blaming you for thinking that. I got curious about that fight once, checked in on it from the reports of the time, and all I was doing there was sharing what I found in regards to the fight being more competitive than what the books had us believe. That's all. Also, not to be a stickler, but the reports I posted on above there clearly show that the writers had Driscoll winning between 5 and 7 rounds in total, with 6 being the majority. Not a "clear 7-8" as I'm sure you can see.
Ok so lets call it a 6 rounds to 3 with 1 even type decision. Still a clear win for Driscoll. Not the Calzaghe-Lacy beating I seemed to have been implying, but still impressive nonetheless. Thanx for the new info. I am going to burn my books.
Regardless of their fight, Attell still had a much deeper resume on the whole. In fact, very few Featherweights match him in that regard. And again, the list was in no particular order. I wouldn't have him as my #1 choice, despite his resume giving him a legit argument for it.
Attell's list of victims (not including draws or losses): George Dixon, Battling Nelson, Johnny Kilbane, Charley White, Owen Moran, Young Erne, Kid Herman, Harlem Tommy Murphy, Pal Moore, Matty Baldwin, Tommy Sullivan, Patsy Kline, Aurelio Herrera, Harry Forbes, KO Chaney, Frankie Burns, Frankie Neil, Jimmy Walsh, etc. Driscoll's: George Dixon, Abe Attell, Pedlar Palmer, Tommy Langdon, Leach Cross, Matty Baldwin, Grover Hayes, Joe Bowker, Johnny Summers, etc.
not sure if Kid was better at 130 then 126 but he is one of my favs. Terrefic fighter Saldivar is someone who i completely forgot about good point. I should prolly move Pacman out and put vincente in there. He does have an excellent resume revised list: 1.Armstrong 2.Pep 3.Sanchez 4.Arguello 5.Saddler 6.Chocolate 7.Driscoll 8.Saldivar 9.Attell 10.Dundee
Although i rank Terry Mcgovern as a bantamweight, i think he has a good case for featherweight as well.
Only Hardcore Jofre fans will try to make it look like Saldivar was still a live fighter, to make it look like one of the best wins of all time for a 37 year old Jofre. The Truth is Saldivar was SHOT. I love Saldviar, he is one of my new favorite fighters, so expect alot more posting on his behalf in the next couple months. Saldivar cleaned out a tough featherweight era, always gave rematches in close fights, and rates very well h2h.
DMT....Kid Chocolate lost to Battling Battino at 126(although Ive read robbery) But I think Kid did his best career work at junior lightweight.
