you got to be trolling. mikey did everything a coach would want him to do, in every moment of the fight. textbook master class in boxing a guy like broner. you want more, feed him more.
Anthony Joshua, Gennady Golovkin, Vasiliy Lomachenko if matched against a non-stylistic threat, Fatvonta Davis. None of the others are 'must watch', it'll just bore them.
Not even worth watching one of Gonzalez or Salido's blood soaked 2,000 punch borefests. And who wants to see Beterbiev or Gvozdyk hit a guy and watch his shadow wilt?
Gonzalez is too small to attract a casuals attention. Salido - for some reason it doesn't look like there's a method to his madness - hence why he's not so popular despite being a good, entertaining fighter. Good one with Beterbiev but even he can be a little boring until he lands that shot to get his opponent in trouble. The Johnson fight being an example. Gvozdyk I like but I don't think he's that fun to watch.
Mikey is textbook and competent, but what does he do that is really phenomenal? The sky sports guys said it over and over again during the Broner fight. He's textbook, not doing anything really eye catching, and his biggest asset appears to be his lack of mistakes. Textbook is fine. Cotto and Bradley were textbook, but from my stars I want more. I like to see some mixture of speed and power like Leonard, Jones Jr, Pacquiao, and Mayweather had. Mikey has good power but I'm not sure he has great power. He definitely doesn't have speed. Broner was obviously faster. I'm not seeing fancy footwork out of him like from Ali, Robinson, Willie Pastrano, or Orlando Canizales. I'm not seeing crazy defense like from a Whitaker, Locche, Lora, or Pep. I'm not seeing creative technique like from Walcott or Moore. I don't see that relentlessness and massive gas tank which Armstrong or JCC had. I don't see that viciousness and love to fight which Duran, Tyson, Pryor, and Pacquiao had. You know that thread where someone said Mikey reminds them of Sanchez. I watched some highlights of Sanchez and he'd jump on guys, hit 'em, and hit 'em, and hit 'em. Mikey does a one two then takes a step back. After I left that thread I went over to the 'who's the best Mexican' thread and wound up watching some tape of Oscar Valdez. Valdez isn't on Mikey's level but he isn't discouraged by getting hit like Mikey is. He throws back and tries to win the exchange. Valdez has got more spirit than Mikey I guess is one way to put it. Valdez needs to shorten up and stop looping his punches but I liked how he seemed 100% committed in there. Another thing, this could have been a 50/50 fight if Broner had let his hands go. Broner hit Garcia on those rare occassions that he decided to throw a punch. If he'd actually tried to open up, I think we'd see Garcia keeping his hands at home. I think Mikey's grand performance was as much to do with Broner not showing up to fight as it was due to the fact that Mikey is very good. We're gonna' need Linares to see what Mikey is really capable of. He needs to face another technically sound boxer his own size who can push him and capitalize on any weaknesses that exist.
My advice to new boxing fans is watch good young fighters coming through (and give a few of those names) because in my opinion it is great to follow a career from the beginning, watch a fighter grow and grow as a boxing fan with them.
Omar Figueroa tops my list. Never in a bad fight, goes to the body like nobody's business. Not saying he's top 10 P4P or anything of the sort, but his lack of defense and his ferocious offense makes him my favorite guy to watch.
the phenomenal thing about mikey, is how he puts it all together. everything is seamless. from the way he forces you to do what he wants you to do by using defence or offense, to the adjustments that he makes to everything that happens in the ring. he sees more than other fighters see, so he always has more information than you do. im always critical of boxers who play it safe and want to do only whats necessary to win, but that aint mikey. by the 3rd rd it was evident to me that broner was just looking to stay out of trouble and was not about to get ko. mikey pressed him, then pressed him some more, till he knew broner was beat, he didnt win rds by a couple of pot shots, he humiliated a man.
I'd tell them to watch Robinson, Ali, Leonard, Hagler, and Hearns fights. It's what got me into the sport. Then some Mike Tyson and Holyfield and I guess you could try to tap into the current scene after that. Or don't even follow any particular fighters. Get a list of the best fights and work your way through them. If you can humiliate a man like that then you can put him away; so why didn't he? Broner is basically a younger version of Andre Berto. By now, his name ought to be synonymous with unfulfilled potential. That low ring IQ had already been exposed by Maidana and Porter; so let's try not to read too much into this victory. For me, guys like Gonzalez, Rigondeaux, Ward, Lomachenko, Inoue, Crawford, Golovkin, Canelo, or Lara pass the eye test better.
then we have a much different eye from where to test from. in 2 years, mikey will be higher p4p than all those guys that you listed.
