Why Margarito but no Williams? How can Margo or Williams be above Pavlik? Hopkins above Rafa Marquez and Cotto? Do you really think Vasquez is THAT much better then Rafa Marquez, have you seen those two ever fight....look pretty damn even steven to me. I think your list is very flawed and illogical......but thats why its YOUR list and not MINE. :good But you posted it so I figured I'd comment on it. :deal
Cotto was on a tear. Destroyed Judah and beat Mosley...who is still a top fighter. He also obliterated quintana. He loses one fight to a possessed ****ing zombie in Margarito, who by the way is in the P4P top 10 and he is suddenly dropped???? Cotto is still top 10 :deal
Not much love for Wlad here, I think he is getting overlooked. I dont consider him top 10 right now but he holds several titles and has already beaten the owner of one of the others. Many of the others mentioned have lost recently or looked average. Wlad hasnt set the world on fire but hasnt lost in 4 years, a loss that he has since avenged. #16 seems reasonable the Dutch Sonny Liston, maybe Id have him a little higher.
To be fair, I should have put Wald in, he does just about deserve to be in the top 20. Its just on a personal level I hate HW boxing at the moment.
Not a bad list at all. Think Margarito is a tad too high, nobody was really talking about him in this list until the Cotto fight, whilst I think Rafa Marquez is a tad unlucky to miss out as well, but otherwise pretty good list. Pavlik maybe a bit high too, I've never been a fan of the idea that beating a p4p fighter immediately qualifies you as such. I've always thought you have to do more good work on a consistent basis against a good range of styles to catch that accolade. I've seen too many fighters rashly thrust into the p4p lists following a win over a p4p fighter only to get found out very soon after. Junior Jones, Vernon Forrest, Mayorga as a few examples. I don't even think Hatton should have been there after his win over Tszyu (though having put him there in the first place it is harsh to drop him for losing to Mayweather). Too often it is simply a case of styles making the fight and for me fighters need to prove themselves over a consistent period. Hopkins for example, lost twice to Taylor, however when you consider the wins he has over a long period probably deserves to be higher p4p.
I wouldn't complain with much of this it's a pretty decent list though anything below about 12 becomes very subjective with widely different views. Campbell is another example of what I was refering to above, I don't honestly think he's anywhere near a p4p fighter with all due respect to the guy. However, he simply had the style to deal with a possibly off-colour Juan Diaz. Nonetheless, I suppose you can't really rank Diaz above him after such a convincing victory.
He was my #7, he got beaten by my #14 and dropped to #12. I've not done a list any time recently but I can't imagine he'd be back on it.
My current attempt for what it is worth: 1. Pac 2. JM Marquez 3. Joe Calzaghe 4. B-hop 5. Israel Vazquez 6. Rafa Marquez 7. Margarito 8. Cotto 9. Pavlik 10. Mijares 11. Calderon 12. Kessler 13. Winky 14. Hatton 15. Haye 16. Williams 17. John 18. Tarver 19. Abraham 20. Mosley
Fair enough, its your opinion and personal preference. I just look at that fight with Margo and see a guy that did everything he was expected and he probably planned on doing and was just beat by a fighter that was determined, hungry, much bigger and an awful style matchup. If I had to see any fighter lose, that is how I want to see them lose. Which is why I don't drop him off my list, I dont think Cotto is any worse after that performance as he was prior, only Margo moves up. why does one fighter always have to move down for another to move up? Why can't one fighter lose but still be just as good as he was, just not as good as the other guy? It bothers me. Like if JMM beats Pac in a third fight, many critics/fans/writers would drop Pac down significantly on their lists. Why? Why not just flip flop 1 & 2?????
He's no better or worse, I don't think, but we learned more. We learned he wasn't as mobile as we thought. We learned that he wasn't as special off the backfoot as some of us had hoped. We learned that he doesn't have that Joe Frazier carry on no matter what type of heart. A very good pressure fighter broke him in the ring. Of course he drops. This happens all the time, in my list and others. But in this fight we learned negative facts about Cotto that hurt his ranking. That is the point.
You know the drill. Calzaghe is unbeaten, loads of defences etc etc. If that isn't your bag, fine, I think you underestimeate longetvity a whole heap. As for Margarito, he is a cracking fighter with the world at his feet, but he has a loss on his record to a recently exposed fighter, vengence not withstanding.
Well yeah, Lacy and Kessler who were ranked 2 and 3 within 18 months of each other. If by the "top dogs" you mean Cotto and Williams then yeah he has faced two of them but don't forget he lost the first one. Hell if top spots were given for simply facing quality opponents Peter Buckley would probably be on there. Calzaghe's resume IMHO compares favourably to Margo's, and I;m a fan of Margo too.
