if dempsey had actually fought and beaten greb, he would be accused of beating up a middleweight. I know Greb was a great p4p fighter and everything, but let's npot exxagerate. He wouldn't stand a chance vs Dempsey.
Its funny you say that, since we have done lists like this on these boards many times over the years I actually went back and looked at the last one I did.. In it I had Frazier and Liston switched, and no Tunney but Schmeling lol..
we're talking about match ups here. Having seen no film of greb, its hard to tell and we simply have to look at his record and the articles about him from those who saw him. From what i can see, he has an outstanding resume and is easily a greater p4p fighter than jack. However he never met a puncher even remotely in dempsey's league and would most likely get ktfo if he actually fought dempsey. Dempsey would be criticised for beating up on a middleweight. I completely understand the Wills criticism. Wills was a worthy contender (the most worthy contender.) and while wills himself did not blame dempsey, its a hole in dempsey's resume. However i do not get the greb thing at all, there was no serious public demand for such a fight as far as i know, its not like greb was chasing dempsey around for the heavyweight title either. There was on the other hand, demand for the wills fight and its a pity that never happened. However i just don't see the criticism of dempsey not fighting greb as valid.
its quite clear....Dempsey was giving title shots to men who Greb was BEATING(Gibbons, Miske, Brennan). It's like Dempsey chose to fight the loser of title eliminators...which looks horrible!
I used to be in bemusement about the whole dempsey-greb thing until I looked further into it. I can only conclude that those who think greb wasn't a worthy opponent, haven't done enough research. Furthermore dempsey wasn't that much bigger than greb. Greb had an iron chin, and fought at a relentless volume. I think he'd have outpointed jack.
his iron chin was never tested vs someone who hit as hard as dempsey. 25-30 lbs, and about 4-5 inches in height is a big difference.
Jack was a giant killer and looked great against those he held an advantage in speed over. Against the smaller opponents he didn't look so great. Greb could quite easily come into this fight about 180. He'd give up no more than a stone maximum. I just can't see jack prevailing.
Great response. If Haye had of been lucky enough to have been born in one of the awful eras like the 10's, 20's or the 80's he would have run riot.
