Tbh, an immediate rematch would have been a stupid move. He clearly had work to do. Any manager who puts his guy in an immediate rematch with a guy who stiffens his man in that manner is very brave. Very brave.

Why would it be against Wlad if the whole point of the contract is that the first defense is not against Wlad?

And Because the WBO said it had to be against Brewster.

According to the WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests, newly crowned Heavyweight Champion Corrie Sanders must defend his title against the best available contender no later than 120 days from the date he won the Championship. Therefore, the bout must take place no later than July 4, 2003. This is due to the fact that Sanders was not the mandatory challenger when he dethroned then Champion Wladimir Klitschko on March 8, 2003 in Hamburg Germany

Bernath: Though Rodney Berman, the promoter of South African WBO heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders has accepted that his fighter will have to defend against No.1 contender Lamont Brewster within 90 days, as per the World Boxing Organization’s decision

Exactly. Especially, if there wasn't an immediate rematch clause to begin with. Sanders was clearly smart enough to not agree to such a thing, he had an option to get a big money fight, and he used it.

In reality I think I should move Ezzard up above Johnson & Jeffries. I know Walcott was erratic early in his career but for me he was the man who had the best chance to upset a lot of these ATG's, he almost did to Louis & Marciano and he KO'd Charles. I like his chances against Tyson and even better vs Foreman. He had the right hand for Holmes and the left hook for Ali....the only thing he seemed to lack was true killer instinct but he had footwork, fast hands and KO power in both

when all is said and done with Vlad & Vitali I will review a place for them, I like what they have accomplished and I see them as a danger to move a few guys downward but I will let the smoke clear when their time is up and see how there opponents make out and end up

If both sides want it , it can get made. Sanders had no interest in fighting Brewster. He was after one big final payday. Brewster was unknown at the time.
Wlad could of made him an offer but he had different plans as you saw qouted.

Wlad and Brewster for the WBO wasn't that one big final payday. Roy Jones and Vitali for the WBA or WBC title was.

The WBO ordered Sanders/Brewster. Wlad could only enfroce the rematch if Sanders beat Brewster and kept the WBO title.

Or a Wlad rematch but Universum steered Wlad away.

It was already witnessed thatUniversum could pull the strings to get what they want as evidenced with Byrd a few years earlier and now with Wlad vs Leapai.

Wlad didn't want it. Accept it.

I don't see how Charles or Walcott sniff the top 10 based on heavyweight achievements. Jeffries and Johnson both dominated the division for a long period of time. How long can we say that about Walcott? Walcott has no chance against a prime Tyson... or Foreman... or Holmes... or Ali.

And all IS said and done with Vitali.

No, Wlad for the WBO would likely not be as big as the two fights Sanders actually seeked out.

I will accept what has been widely reported as fact. Not a Duckvelvet conspiracy theory.

You can't prove Wlad didn't want it. In fact the sentence you even zeroed in stated Wlad wanted an immediate rematch. But as noted, Sanders had the right to another fight and was already in talks with Roy Jones.

Well he's not going to admit to not wanting it is he?

Universum said in black and white what the plans were. Why is this even debatable still. In his next outing he didn't even fight guys like Oquendo or Ruiz. He was matched against an total no name cream puff Fabio Moli.

Well you can speculate all you want. But these are the facts:

-There was no immediate rematch clause. Sanders had the right to one WBO defense before being contractually obligated to face Wlad.

-The WBO ordered Sanders vs Brewster.

-Wlad said he wanted an immediate rematch.

-Universum said they wanted Wlad to take a tune up while Sanders pursued his one fight option.

-Sanders negotiated with Roy Jones but could not reach an agreement.

-Sanders vacated the WBO belt in exchange for a #2 WBC rating and opportunity to face Vitali.

Yep, he fought Moli and was still chasing the Sanders rematch.

Wladimir is determined to meet Corrie Sanders before the end of the year, to hopefully brush away the demons from their first meeting in March this year when he was knocked out and relieved of his WBO heavyweight crown. Klitschko could also be in the picture for a shot at the WBA crown should champion Roy Jones vacate to meet Antonio Tarver at light-heavyweight.

Don't see how you can say that about Ali, Holmes, and Foreman. Foreman lost to Jimmy Young, and was given fits from 190lb Gregorio Peralta. Holmes struggled with 6'1 202lb Mike Weaver and blown up light-heavyweight michael spinks. Ali struggled with 190lb Doug Jones. To say Walcott has "Zero Chance" is a huge stretch. Walcott has a rare style...a sneaky counterpuncher with a big punch. He also has elite upperbody movement, tricky footwork, and a stiff jab. Walcotts lack of size is a handicap, but he gives most ATG heavyweights a difficult time.

Walcott would shut out James Jeffries 15 rounds to 0.

Wlad can say whatever he wants. The history books show he fought Moli instead of a rematch with Sanders.

They put forward Vitali because he was the better candidate to beat him so they could claim the defeat was avenged.
It was a role reversal of the Byrd situation. Wlad fought the style Vitali wanted no part of.
They won at the time but they will lose lecagy wise in the long run.

-That would be one seriously inaccurate and incomplete history book. It will also show Wlad fighting for the belt Sanders vacated after sitting out of action for a year to show up in poor shape against the man now generally regarded as the lesser of the two brothers.

-In terms of legacy, the loss to Sanders is buried beneath Wlad's 8 year reign as the top HW. Look at this thread, this a pretty good collection of fans, and most have Wlad in their top 20, so you are going to have to accept that.
