1 - Sugar Ray Robinson 2 - Charley Burley * 3 - Mickey Walker 4 - Sugar Ray Leonard 5 - Sam Langford ** 6 - Barbados Joe Walcott 7 - Henry Armstrong 8 - Emile Griffith 9 - Ted Kid Lewis 10-Roberto Duran 11-Jose Napoles 12-Wilfred Benitez 13-Kid Gavilan 14-Fritzie Zivic 15-Carmen Bassilo 16-Jack Britton 17-Barney Ross 18-Holman Williams *** 19-Oscar De La Hoya 20-Pernell Whitaker * Not a word from you, JohnThomas **Iknow Langford didn't do a lot of fighting at this limit, but he could have done, and he's a head to head monster for me. ***Justto mention that most of Williams really good wins are above the weight of Welter, again he's here on head to head merit, plus a "could have been" attitude. ***
My Top 20: 1. Robinson 2. Leonard 3. Napoles 4. Armstrong 5. Gavilan 6. Hearns 7. Griffith 8. Whitaker 9. Walker 10. Ross 11. Walcott 12. Duran 13. Benitez 14. Basilio 15. Burley 16. Kid Lewis 17. Rodriguez 18. Britton 19. De La Hoya 20. McClarnin
Bracketed him with Holman Williams and tho great Holman was certainly bettered. Aesthetics and skills doesn't always = greatest when considering actual outcomes.
But sometimes they are. What do you have to say about Archie Moore's appraisal of Burley, or Angelo Dundee's? Moore rates him as the best he ever fought, and better than Robinson peak for peak, Dundee considers him worthy of consideration for the very top spot. Why are these two compromised, if myself and Futch are not trustworty (i love how that looks - myself and Futch )? Williams was indeed bettered. Most fighters fighting to these schedules were, as you know.
A pretty good initial list McGrain, it certainly has it's merits. Having said that I'm surprised you have Napoles outside the Top 10 (I actually put him above Griffith) and Whitaker as low as you do. Off course it's purely subjective- some interesting picks and it's good to see I'm not the only one who holds Benitez in such high esteem.
Catch ya before you had time to edit Rooster did i? You actually had me, by the time i quoted your list was gone and i knew you'd backed out, but the good old back button and a bit of cut n' paste worked a charm Erm, great list mate
:rofl :rofl Good to see he's still sticking to his "comitment to excellence" as always. Keep up the good work Rooster.I always laugh when I think of you.
Very true that I'm just trying to work out what Honeyghan did to get to where he is. Curry is his only big win and i don't see Don in the 6 places below him. I do remember tho Rooster really talking up, hmmm what's his name, Bumphus Marlon Starling would be feeling a little hard done by, he whupped Roosters 11 and 14 yet still can't make the 20 :rofl
