Not sure that Joe Louis should rank higher than George Chuvalo if we're only looking at the body of work that he did from 1950-1951 when contrasted to most of Chuvalo's whole career.
Part of my list is head to head. chuvalo was not hard to outbox and had trouble with good jabs. He was decisioned by average fighters Pat McMurtry Eduardo corletti Pete radamacher bob cleroux... Zora Folley couldn't miss chuvalo with his left jab all night. I expect Louis to decision chuvalo in a similar manner using his telephone pole left jab to pile up the points. Chuvalo wasn't skilled enough to out point Louis and wasn't a dangerous enough puncher like Marciano to threaten putting an older Louis away. Expect chuvalos face to look like a mess after this one
I Rate Johansson fairly...I just cannot stand it when ChokeLab 1. attempts to claim Liston did not beat the best of his era because he didn't fight Johansson 2. Johansson had a good chance to beat Liston 3. Johansson ranks near Liston
This is a solid list. Everyone is defensible for being on the list. My disagreements. Minor--I would rank Marciano above Liston. Major--I don't see Quarry in the top ten. He should drop a few notches. Ellis and Machen for two should rate above him. Machen had a better overall career, I think, and also beat Quarry when past it (Quarry was young). Ellis simply beat Quarry when it really mattered. Layne should be much higher. This is your list, and Layne after all has wins over your number five and six guys. Does anyone outside of your top ten have two such big wins? I would move Layne up about ten spots. Poor Roy Harris gets no respect. He never lost to anyone but top level fighters and beat Pastrano and Baker. I would put him in the 30th slot in place of Spencer, or at least in the HM slot in place of DeJohn. Pastrano also should be in the top thirty somewhere.
Again, not to nag about Hurricane Jackson, but his record was 7-4 against the fighters on this list. Think he needs to be on this list. Pity he couldn't duck once in awhile.
I agree. Forgot about Jackson, but he should be on this list. It is very tough to rate such different careers. I was looking closely at the list and at who should go off. Well, I'll offend everyone. Doug Jones--has the KO of Folley, and gave the young Ali a tough and close fight, but his record against this group is 1-7 losing to everyone he fought--Ali, Frazier, Terrell, Johnson, Folley, Machen, and Chuvalo. Chuvalo--is 2-9 against these guys, but his wins are that fluky fight with Quarry, and over Jones. LaStarza--1-2. His only win is razor-thin decision against Layne, and the two losses to Marciano. He did give Marciano a tough time. Spencer--Had an erratic career. The big win over Terrell jumped him high in the ratings, but Ramos did the same, and on balance I would put him on the same level as Ramos and not in the top 30.
