I've just finished watching this fight twice in a row. Where's my damn cookie? The broadcast didn't put stats up at the end, and Compubox wasn't covering it. I'd like them to take a look at the tape sometime but don't know how to contact them. So here's my bash at it. I've done my own punch counts for several years now, so I don't think I'll be too far off. For a 12 round fight, gimme a margin of error of about +/- ten punches at most. Usually I'm within single figures. If anyone else feels like doing their own count, feel free. Just don't blame me if you end up a gibbering insane wreck from the boredom. Holyfield's ridiculously low punch output did have the benefit of making him much more accurate than Valuev. Most of Valuev's landed jabs were to Holyfield's chest and midriff. Valuev's head jabs were usually either pushed aside with Holyfield's open glove, or way too short.
Not at all. He clearly landed more, when Holyfield other hand relied his one or two attacks per round.
Very similar to the statistic that was broadcast on TV (for rounds 1-10): Valuev: 77/122 (63% ratio) Holyfield: 72/151 (48% ratio) Get over it, Valuev won. Those guys who are complaining that Holy should have won make 1 huge mistake: They count the early rounds as 10-9 rounds for Holyfield. But with such a low output it's very OK to score the early rounds EVEN and the later rounds for Valuev. When was the last fight you scored a round for a fighter who threw 2-3 punches more than his opponent? Ridiculous to give such tight boring rounds to a fighter instead of a draw. Valuev didn't win clearly but his win is far from robbery. I predicted a MJ12 for HOLYFIELD, I was wrong, because Holy did far too little to get a title. What was he thinking? Being a counterpuncher but running away? Crap.
I don't know WHERE those guys got just 122 punches for Valuev from, unless they decided not to bother counting jabs. The pace was so deadly slow, clear intended punches were pretty easy to count. I certainly didn't spend hours watching this accursed abortion of a bout just to make up imaginary numbers. Those are the ones I came up with watching it, as I say feel free to tally your own. I'd rather ram a spoon up my nose than watch this abomination again.
Holyfield was robbed. This obssession with "punchstats" are one of the worst things that ever happened in boxing.
I've seen many worse...but not usually as title fights. Valuev in particular should feel deeply embarrassed. He had huge problems dealing with fairly straightforward movement.
