Mason lost and retired at the beginning of '91, I think.

It was the only thin thing about him!

Mason beat a lot of 20-40 ranked fighters. His style was a bit dull though, and he often lumbered to the wins. But he did have a fair whack and his chin was sound, which no matter what era of the Heavyweights, got you to a pretty high ranking.

Check out the ring ratings in 1994. A loaded year.

Witherspoon was in a slump and Coetzer was never that good solid but nothing that special.

Mercer was still kind of green then, Mercer was much improved after this.

    1991..

    Ridick Bowe...
    Evander Holyfield...
    Mike Tyson...
    George Foreman...
    Lennox Lewis...
    Donovan Ruddock...
    Ray Mercer...
    Tommy Morrison...
    Michael Moorer...

    Honorable mentions to..

    Francesco Damiani...
    Bert Cooper...
    Tim Witherspoon...
    Oliver McCall...
    Tony Tucker...
Bruce Seldon.. Bruce , Tony, Oliver, had eventful fights within the next year or two..

Tony boxed for the world title 3 more times, against Lewis, Seldon, Hide..
Bruce won a version over Tony Tucker...
Oliver beat highly touted Damiani to get a shot at Lewis, the astonished everyone by winning WBC...
Bert almost shocked the world by knocking Evander about as a last minute replacement for Damiani.. (also had a great tear up with Mercer shortly before this..)

It was actually a great few years.. 1991 was like the great kick of for the whole Lewis, Bowe, Evander , Moorer series of battles... Tyson sadly exited for jail not long after..

A wasted great time for Mike Tyson... The sleeper George Foreman had 2 or 3 bites at the cherry, Morrison, Evander and most famously Mike Moorer to finally become the granddaddy of champions........

Even Larry re introduced himself with championship fights with Evander, Ray and Oliver..

Garys Eye injury hurt his career , it was started in his fight with Everett Martin.....

Gary was retired by the only man to ever beat him in the Ring, Lennox Lewis..

Everett Martin also became the first man to knock unbeaten Mike Moorer down in Michigan...

Later Martin became Riddick Bowes sparring partner and travelling companion , contributing heavily towards Bowes terrible eating habits .. Eddie Futch once told me that Bowe travelled to Las Vegas to fight herbie Hide in that Bowe Mobile, along with his entourage, Everrett had Bowe engage in eating competitions at stop offs along the way.. Bowe against other advisors better judgement .. ate competetively with Martin, fried chicken, Frozen Yoghurt by the bucket load and when they hit vegas he was almost 268lbs.. Eddie threatened to walk away if Bowe didnt lost the poundage by fight time, Bowe did lose some of the weight.. But one fight later , Eddie left camp and Bowe to fend for himself.. They never properly reconciled, Thell Torrence took the reigns for the Gonzales fight..

Everett Martin was a heavyweight jinx.. LOL...

As someone already mentioned, Gary Mason was basically removed from the picture by probably early to mid 1991.. He fought Lewis around march or April, lost the match and was pretty much done. He also did not look that good in fights against journeyman Martin and Wills the year before.. Most of the sanctioning bodies along with the ring magazine had dropped him pretty far in the ratings before Lennox even fought him.... Your point about there being a lot of depth is valid though... Just outside that top 10, you had guys like Bert cooper, Orlin Norris, Francesco Damiani, Oliver McCall and even an old Boncrusher.. Very good era.

I remember they did a little prefight vinette on that whole Bowe Bus that stopped at fast food restraunts. Futch actually oficially left after the first Golota fight. He was in the corner for the Gonzalez fight, probably the last time Bowe was hungry for a fight. I think Bowe would have tore through Lewis had that been him that night.
