I can't take credit for this. A guy I know, did the work.

But it's something that's been bugging us both for a while. This dogma that
Manny Pacquiao is necessarily more famous, and popular than Floyd Mayweather.

So we decided to find out, using the wonder of Googles latest marketing/communications software. This is software that monitors search requests, and tells you where they come from. And is based solely on direct searches.
    Here are both fighters results.

    http://www.google.com/trends?q=Manny+Pacquiao

    http://www.google.com/trends?q=floyd+mayweather&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

    Really interesting results.

    To summarize

    Pacquiao

1: Pacquiao had no popularity whatsoever until the very end of 2008 (when he fought De la Hoya)

2: Pacquiao's level of popularity and interest in the States is considerably lower than Mayweathers (probably understandable). He gets more search requests from Singapore and UAE, than he does the United States.

3: The vast majority of Pacquiaos popularity, and interest, comes, from the Phillipines, the UAE, and Singapore.

    Mayweather

1: Mayweather had no popularity whatsoever until 2007, when he fought De la Hoya

2: Mayweather actually gets more interest from the Phillipines than he does anywhere other country.

3: However, he also gets high levels of interest from the USA, UK, Ireland, Europe, Mexico, Canada and Australia.

    Conclusion:

Pacquiao's popularity, is mainly based in Asia. And his interest levels in the USA, Mexico, and Europe are low.

To prove this point - Mayweather gets more direct web hits from the UK, than Pacquiao does from the United States.

Both have similar levels of interest, but Pacquiao's is more condensed to Asia.

Mayweather also gets large amounts of interest from Asia. Most likely a by product of his rivalry with Pacquiao (who says being a bad guy don't pay.......)

Pacquiao has led monthly trends in recent quarters, but as these tables show, web hits largely correlates with boxers competing.

Interest in the boxers is actually very low, at times when they aren't fighting

Also - neither fighter was very popular until they beat De la Hoya.

Why are people from singapore and uae so interested in pac.
Allthough it doesnt surprise me at all that floyd is bigger in the us and pac in asia.
I wonder what the most searched boxer is from my country.

    More hits in total.

Based on search topics that include himself and Mayweather in it.

This is search trends, that only include the fighters own bouts - basically

Interesting this is that Mayweather gets a lot of interest from the Fillipines as well.

It's almost as though, the Fillipines is driving boxing at the minute............

Probably because of the high amount of Filipino migrant workers in those countries.

You are reading it only partially. Superimpose the results over each other.

Here's the breakdown of the Top 20 biggest stars in the United States, using Google Search figures (Search totals are listed next to the fighter):

    1) Manny Pacquiao: 246,000
    2) Floyd Mayweather Jr.: 128,100
