We always talk about dirty fighters on here, but one thing which is even more frustrating is trainers who teach their fighters to spoil and make it messy. Of the elite crop of trainers around now, Richardson is by far the worst for this. Yeah, he can add a few skills to his fighters repertoire but at what cost? Mosley has gone from an all-action, free throwing puncher to a guy who is overly cautious and willing to spoil at any time. He held excessively even against Margarito, did so against Mayweather and the Mora and Pacquiao fights were poor. I don't think it's just the fact he's coming to the end of his career either. He's still fast and strong, it's just like he's fighting with a more cautious style. The only other notable fighter Richardson trains doesn't need explaining. Hopkins was a cleaner fighter before Richardson took over as the chief trainer, though. Every trainer has a style you will see in each fighter to some degree. Roach likes to have his fighters throwing combinations, using angles and so on. Steward likes to avoid in-fighting, using a long jab etc.. If Richardson has a style as a trainer, it's to pass on how to spoil and disrupt a fight to make it ugly.
He didn't hold excessively against margo. He got his shots off and closed the distances limiting margo leverage on his punches and toeing up is fine.
shane has always fought the way he has. Hell freddie roach on an amateur training video showed how to disguise an elbow while throwing a hook.
Shane is fighting **** not because of Nazim but because he's shot. Richardson normally gives out sound advice but its like trying to teach a baby how judicial activism works in the Supreme Court-its difficult. Hopkins's first fight with Richardson was against Pavlik i believe, and was that dirty? His next was Ornelas, was that dirty? The RJJ fight was but thats because Hopkins naturally fights that way. The Pascal fight was not dirty...
you dont know **** about baaaxin! brother nazim was with old man rivers since 1993, he was the man responsible for creating the gameplan while bouie fischer kept him sharp, brother nazim took over the corner from the second jermain taylor fight.
He wasnt the head trainer for Nard until the Pavlik fight! The Taylor 2 fight was a one off. Check for yourself even Richardson was indeed in the Hopkins corner for a long time but didnt take over till a decade or so later
You make a solid point. Nazim encourages fighters to win in a way that is within the current understanding of the rules that involves smothering. This is fair enough. Ultimately it is bad for boxing and it is an area that needs to be dealt with. Fighters should be warned twice and then deducted a point every time they hold deliberately. Forget the unspoken rule of acceptable holding, it's bad for the sport. Penalize them and they won't do it.
Jack you are trippin'! Mosley sparked Margarito holding or not. Richardson was begging the guy to pull the trigger in the right. You can hear him shouting for Mosley to add some offense to the mix the whole fight against Pacquiao. "Right hand Shane! Right hand!" You also have to realize the age of these men. It is reasonable and expected that they will use some spoiler tactics. The problem is when the fighters DON'T pull the trigger after using the spoiler tactics to survive/drain the opponent. This was 100% the problem with Mosley last night. What you need to realize is that nobody can get in there and fight for you. Richardson has obviously done a great job, but I would really like to see some of his younger prospects in action to make a negative determination like this. Why you hatin'?
Mosley's and Hopkin's huge ebbs and flows in performance are a bit suspicious but I dont think it has a lot to do with their trainer
naz is a piece of ****en ****.....i've said it since day one...he took mosley from a fighter, to a thinker....he puts all his fairytales into his fighters heads, and ****s them up.............reason why his son, and nephew are garbage....
To his defense, he was telling Shane that he needs to start fighting... that he didn't come there to compete, he came there to win. He was begging Shane to follow up his circle to Pac's right by shooting his right hand as Pac turned into it. Shane simply wouldn't pull the trigger. You could hear Richardson begging Shane to "trust him" about throwing punches in the corner.
This. In one of the rounds in the corner you hear Richardson saying 'you need to get more aggressive' and in response Shane comes out and is extra cautious atsch
