Here's a bit of a teaser. The norm is that as a fighter's age and career progresses, he will ultimately move up a weight. So here's the question. Can you name 10 champions who lost/vacated/stripped of the title actually moved down a weight to fight for the world title at the lighter weight? I was thinking of this the other day and came up with 10, but I somehow think there's a lot more. I'll save everyone a bit of trouble here by saying don't include Johnny Dundee, Henry Armstrong, Roy Jones or Pernell Whitaker because they never really lost their titles and held both concurrently. Have fun.
In a way: Orlin Norris, Julian Jackson, Anthony Mundine, Chris Byrd, Jeremy Williams, Herbie Hide, Bob Fitzsimmons. For sure: Sung-Kil Moon
OK, tongue in cheek but: Roy Jones Jr! He was HW champ, lost it and now is cruiser (ahem...) champ with the uh...WBU...or something. Can I get 1/2 a point? Sorry, didn't see him in the OP, I'll think harder next time!
Frank, good picks in Fitz, Moon and Mundine. I hadn't even thought of Moon and Mundine. I knew there was a lot more out there. Should have mentioned I'm drawing the line at WBO, nothing further down the pike (i.e. WBU, IBO, etc.). Al, Griffith is on my list, good one. Area 53, the jury is still out on Butler until he steps down to the plate (pun intended). 1) Fitz 2) Emile Griffith 3) Sung Kil Moon 4) Anthony Mundine 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10)
Now we're talking. 1) Fitz 2) Emile Griffith 3) Sung Kil Moon 4) Anthony Mundine 5) Carlos Ortiz 6) 7) 8) 9) 10)
What about Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns? Leonard fought Terry Norris late in his career at lightmiddle. His previous fight was a win over Duran in a super middleweight fight. Hearns jumped from light middle to take Dennis Andries lightheavy title and then dropped down to middleweight to beat Juan Roldan for the middleweight title-.
Amost at 10. Leonard, Hearns and Oscar were solid choices. McGrain, Phillips didn't meet the criteria of a world champ moving down as he was a contender at the time he fought Quartey at 147. But, good effort. 1) Fitz 2) Emile Griffith 3) Sung Kil Moon 4) Anthony Mundine 5) Carlos Ortiz 6) Ray Leonard 7) Tommy Hearns 8) DeLaHoya 9) 10)
Gamboa does not meet the criteria. Mosley does, but I had overlooked Judah when putting my own together. Good call. We made 10. I'll finish this off with 4 more that I had found. If anything it got the mind thinking. 1) Fitz 2) Emile Griffith 3) Sung Kil Moon 4) Anthony Mundine 5) Carlos Ortiz 6) Ray Leonard 7) Tommy Hearns 8) DeLaHoya 9) Shane Mosley 10) Zab Judah 11)Alfredo Marcano (it was Marcano that got me thinking of this in the first place) 12)Alfonso Lopez 13)Leon Spinks 14)Meldrick Taylor
