California titles weren't all that recognized. The Black Murderers Row used to fight for the California state title all the time a few years later.

The New York State Athletic Commission title which Garcia had held more weight, but that wasn't at stake.

It was also only 10 rounds, but then again so was Tunney-Dempsey.

hmmm, interesting. i think maybe we've skewed that bout and what was at stake a little bit in an effort to further boost armstrong's credentials. as if they need a boost...

I watched Reggie Johnson put on an excellent display to beat Steve Collins clearly, and Johnson hardly won a round against Jones, that was impressive, especially when you consider Collins went on to beat Eubank and Benn 2x.

I think the fact that Garcia was a recognized MW champ though adds to the significance though.

Not a usual situation (that I'm aware of).

thank you! the reggie johnson win is hardly ever acknowledged and either ignored or diminshed when people trash jones. johnson was a very good fighter and solid champion and was absolutely BRUTALIZED by jones. I'd put him on a level with the tarvers of his time and he barely survived that fight

I dont think there has ever been a fighter that was unbeatable in their prime.

Its ignorant to be honest to think that there was

I think Johnson would of given Benn and Eubank all they could handle if not beat them, id tip him to beat Eubank i really would, he was technically very sound and a better puncher than his record suggested.

He put Toney and his arse and hurt Collins a couple of times imo, not badly but.

damn right, i don't know if he'd beat eubank but he'd put up a hell of a fight. his technique was VERY solid, which didn't help against such an unorthodox fighter in roy. he is a perfect illustration of the point that roy didn't just fight bums...he just dominated them so thoroughly that they were immediately discounted

Well i take that back i dont think he would definitely beat him, but i would not hesitate to take a punt/bet on Reggie either.

Eubank had some very off nights where he got the benefit of the doubt, most notably against nobody..........Dan Schommer, Eubank himself said he lost that fight.

haha, yeah eubank was a terribly frustrating fighter to be a fan of. though his first fight with benn (who i absolutely love) made me a fan for life. i thought he'd puss out and yet he fought a balsy fight against the scariest mother****er of the day. whatever eubank became he was a MAN and a ****ing brilliant fighter pre-watson
