I believe he’s a great fighter and I rate him in my top 10 all time at 175 but I think many overrate him when they call him the best ever and pick him to defeat 220lb ATG heavyweight champions in fantasy fights when he refused to fight those types during his own time on film, I think he was a master at using his length and reach to outbox shorter slower opponents but I don’t think he would get away with it against taller faster foes. Tunney kept his hands low and never ever brought his guard up. He avoided punches with in and out movement and leaning back which is a very horrible habit that only the elitist of athletes like Ali can get away with. Tunney does not fit this category. Tunney did not move his head at all. I wonder how he would have fared vs a good tall jab. This type of defense would get himself on a lot of trouble vs modern fighters who could combination punch and had reach
The saying handsome is as handsome does springs to mind. These fighters don't especially impress me on film, but when I compare their results to the ones that do impress me, I have to conclude that they had something going on.
