hans, your a Hall of Fame poster but your disposition regarding joe calzaghe has become redundant.

calzaghe is the modern day marciano and i dont mean that in a good way.

calzaghe did not beat 1 hall of fame fighter within 5 years of their prime.

And what was Hopkins doing in his physical prime years? After being beaten by Jones he spent a decade milking his paper title for all it was worth in the weak middleweight division before eventually unifying the titles against weak opposition save Trinidad. Hopkins Middleweight resume is weak, the best names on it are blown up welterweights in De La Hoya and Trinidad - Trinidad actually was potentially a force in the division but De La Hoya clearly couldn't handle the weight and his only win there is a gift against Sturm. He is just as guilty of wasting his best years fighting in a weak division whie avoiding real challenges against better fighters in heavier divisions as Calzaghe was.

my apologies, I should also contribute to the topic of the thread.

I would suggest 'could beat' rather than would beat, so -

    Just in SMW -
Obviously Jones and Toney. likely Ward.
probably Nunn, perhaps prime Eubank, Benn, likely prime Graham, perhaps Watson, Lilles, definitely Ottke in Germany, arguably uninjured Kessler in Denmark.
Then of course without a doubt Ray Leonard (if he had gone up when prime, Hearns if massed up to smw when prime, rather than their late forays into the division.
Joe running from a career high payday with Froch when he had all the time in the world to fight him before roy, suggests that Froch had an even chance at least. Joe also appeared to feign interest in Glen JOhnson and Antwun Echols but he probably knew they had a very good chance of beating him so avoided them in the end.

Apart from Kessler, one of the 3 world level SMWs (lacy, reid, maybe bika) that Joe fought, Robin Reid, could be argued to have beaten him.

That's about a 16 SMW names so far, way more than the one asked for. With some digging we could likely make the list 20 names long.

I don't think any of the other Calzaghe defences against nationals and subnationals would stand a chance in a rematch, though that's probably why he picked them first time round. Byron Mitchell was the best of that bunch, he had a small chance of beating him ifn he'd been allowed to pounce on Joe after he knocked him down, but not likely with that welsh ref on standby ready to if necessary help Joe to his feet and who stopped the fight when Byron fell over but not for Joe falling. SO who knows it might have gone the other way. Maybe Byron might have won at home.

LOL, and that list is only of MW-SMW fighters . . . not to mention all the LHW who could have made 168 that would have whipped his ass

Roy Jones vs. James Toney was a far superior performance than Calzaghe vs. Lacy, and Toney is a far superior fighter than Lacy..

I don't pick anyone over Roy Jones at 168
