Most referees would have called it a knockdown. If you go down on the end of a punch its supposed to be ruled a KD. Chuvalo got wobbled and it effected his balance and he went down. Period. It was a KD and the only time I can recall Mercante blowing such a call. Chuvalo's rep is so overblown its become ridiculous. "Who could have knocked Chuvalo down" LOL. Lots of people if the guy didnt go into a shell and try to survive like Ross Purrity when he realized he couldnt win. Anyone think if the ref hadnt stopped it that he wouldnt have gone down in a round or two against Frazier or Foreman? Even the relatively light hitting Ellis had him backed into a corner covering up and taking heavy punishment in their bout.

So Chuvalo was a defensive wizard ? A coward ? Come on .. look at this film, count how many flush shots the guy took from a young, fresh and prime George Foreman and tell me who you think could take the same shots and still remain standing ? Fighters have died from less ..

    Ike Ibeabuchi.

Tough to see Chuvalo absorbing punches from that guy.

Are you going to tell me chuvalo didnt cover up and just march forward without trying to win over and over again? Get real. Lots of fighters better than Chuvalo and just as durable have been stopped because instead of living off their rep of never being off their feet they actually tried to win. Chuvalo spent most of his career content to hear the final bell and brag about not being kod. How is that any better than a purrity?

Chuvalo was quite gallant in trudging forward and taking shots from his opponents, and he has always maintained that he was covering up strategically vs Foreman, hoping that he could make it to the end of the round, and that Foreman would gas himself out too...i,e,, he was killing two birds with one stone in going into his shell vs George.
I do think that one of those trips to the canvas in the Bonavena fight was a legit kd...and I believe that Klompton is right in asserting that the ref blew the call. Oscar was so unpredictable and unorthodox stylewise and in the way he threw his punches that I believe he was able to effectively do the "impossible" in introducing George to the canvas.
Tyson was quite explosively unpredictable to far more sophisticated degree than Bonavena, and I believe that he would have been able to drop George, as I believe that Lennox Lewis would have been able to likewise, though through a very different punch delivery system...if he used his "A" style, lobbing power punches...instead of the "B" style that he used vs Tua. There's no way that a guy, even with a celebrated chin like Chuvalo could have withstood a few flush power shots from Lewis. Tua would have gone down if LL hadn't decided to be on cruise control in their very disappointing bout.

I'd give Joe Louis a shot -- a sharp-punching sniper I think has a better shot than a battering-ram type to get George off his feet. Not sure what it would have taken to keep him there, maybe a wrecking ball.

The left hook Foreman landed on Chuvalo would have dropped him if the ropes wouldn't have caught him...

If the ref had not have stopped the fight with Foreman when he did, Chuvalo would have gone down soon after.

I think there has been quite a few that would eventually accomplish the feat if the referee had let the fights go on long enough.
Foreman comes first to mind ,on the other hand Foreman might have killed him before he went down.:think
