Vargas fought veteran winky in his 18th pro fight, and after one of his most disorganised and unfocused training camps of his career (not only due to family issues, but also facing prison/jail time), and still held his own. I dont see why the Vargas that showed up to fight tito (having then been in the ring with Winky, Ike, and Ross Thompson) wouldnt have been able to beat Winky again.

If we want to throw out Vargas...

I think Paul Williams is a bad matchup for Winky, even though i dont really count pauls win over wink that much (until wink shows me that hes still got a lot left) i still think that any winky would have his hands full with Paul Williams, i think a come forward one/two'er who stalks behind a high guard like winky, no matter how great he is (and yes, winky IS great) will have his hands full with a tall rangy non stop punching volume puncher like williams. Wether he would win? Id love to see it, but i have no doubt in my mind he would provide more then a 'test' for winky.

DLH, Dlh had enough skills and movement (add to that a somewhat underrated strength and sturdyness) to make things interesting against Winky, i for one could def see winky walking him down and winning rounds, but DLH is no joke, and he would use the ring while pumping out round stealing combos and not being there to get hit in return ala Mosley and Tito, i def see prime DLH at 154 giving Winky a test as well.

    Just IMO.

Though i do want to add.... there is something about winky that he simply wins. We can analyse all we want but when he gets in there he just takes control most of the time.

Think about it. If Winky NEVER fought tito, people would be on here talking about how he wouldnt last with Tito because he would be walking right into titos power, and nobody could last against tito doing that. But thats just what he did, and he made TITO look like the smaller, weaker fighter in there.

Against Mosley, people thought Mosley would be too fast, that he could pepper Winkys high guard and win a decision, but not only did Winky beat Mosley, he mandhandled him (granted, 154 is not Mosleys division)

But its just to note that Winky has a way of overcoming the things that other fighters should have advantages over him of. And i am not a fan of winky in the slightest, but thats just my opinion.

The way Winky handled Tito & Shane (twice) imo struck fear into the God of DLH and that pains me to say as Oscar's my boy , Vargas hhhhmmmmm , he was approaching damaged goods by that stage im not sold on that .

    Good post :good

Im hearing the Williams shout , terrible stylistic match up for Winky .

When do you think a prime DLH @54 was ???? im thinking 2002 Vargas .

Im not sold on Vargas in 03 , Winky was too good then he was a much stronger beast @54 than in 99.

I dont think so and its not because i dont think Forrest isnt a badass, but IMO, Winky would be all wrong for Forrest.

If winky was more like Clottey, meaning he picked his spots a bit more and was much more patient and stalking, i would agree that Forrest would have the advantage of his boxing skills and would completely outbox Winky.

However, Winky comes right at you and throws his punches right down the pipe, and Forrest's achilles heel are big strong guys that put pressure on him, and while i think he would def see some success here and there, i think Winky would be too big, too strong, and be putting way too much pressure and be 'too close' to forrest (forrest likes it when people stay in his 'range' and box with him more then he likes people in his grill putting the pressure on) and while ill take forrest over almost anybody at 147, Winky at 154 is a tall order for him given the matchup IMO

Would it be a test? ya im sure, i dont like when outcomes get carried away between two great fighters, they are not facing a tune up here, hed be facing vernon forrest and im sure it would def be a test, but i dont think it would be as competetive as it would look on paper, just imo.

Oscar De La Hoya though he wasn't at his best at 54. Sergio Martinez, he can neutraize the jab, though might lack the workrate.

Now the magic name is non other than Paul Williams. It was an old and rusty Winky, I get it, but the Punisher has the worst style possible for such a methodical boxer as Ronald, super long arms, all kinds of crazy angles, overwhelming punch output, totally out of Winky's comfort zone. He was very, very uncomfortable in there because he usually pops out the jab and sets up the left for coming in fighters or uses more solid skills vs. boxers, but PW was able to throw from across the street.

Lol, Williams could go all around Winky Wright and still land a punch. This one never gets old! :)

I might be mistaken, but I'm almost certain Wright turned down one of if not the biggest offer of his career from ODLH to fight. I know it's come up on the forum before but I can't recall what the time period was. It was still in good years from both of them though, I'm certain.

 It really, really doesn't. Didn't they say something like "Is that illegal? It must be if we've never seen it."?

I viewed an interview with Oscar saying they offered him his biggest payday up to that point.... it was when talks were still going on and oscar said he wanted to fight winky and they were offering him a career high, obviously nothing came of it but i dont think it was oscar that killed it.

Yeah, I think Wright was taking flack at that time for pricing himself out on the big fights he "wanted". Had a severe overestimation of his market value. And I admit, his market value was way behind his talent level. But part of that is his own fault.

EL: I spoke to Oscar De La Hoya briefly a few weeks back and I asked him if there is any chance that he will unify the titles against you and his response in a nutshell was “no chance” and then he went on to say “beating the big names means more to me now then winning titles”. How do you feel about that?

WR: Oscar’s scared and I hope Shane beats him. Shane said if he beats Oscar that he would fight me so I hope he won’t change his mind and run like Oscar because it’s bull****.

I know this was post DLH Mosley 2 , so im assuming your talking post Winky Shane 1 or 2 the offer was made ????

You may be right but i find it hard to beleive as Winky was singing DLH's name from the roof tops as late as 08 :

I do remember that period Winky had where he wanted the spoils of the DLH fight in purse terms as he felt he was the better fighter that i do remember .
