I feel it's more a question of who he's fighting than what he's weighing.

He is an incredible fighter and p4p one of the best ever, but to think he wins someone weighing 122 then gets destroyed weighing 126 doesn't really make sense to me.

Losing to Sanchez is more a question of Sanchez being too good than Sanchez being too big.

    Would you agree with this?

    1. Gomez losing to Sanchez at 126 was more about Sanchez being too good instead Sanchez being too big.

    2. Sanchez at 126 probably beat a 95% capacity of Gomez rather than a 100% capacity of Gomez that he would have met at 122 pounds.

Being recognized the GOAT in your weight class as an accolade is overrated. Some weight classes have been around longer and featured drastically more talent historically.

There is a difference between being the GOAT at 168 than 147 for example.

In this case look at 122. Historically it's a fairly weak division. There is MAB who was a fine 122 pounder, but did his greatest work north of the division. Manny Pacquiao was a fine 122 pounder, but like MAB did his best work north of the division. Again Erik Morales same thing his finest work came north of 122 although his body of work at 122 is pretty solid. There is Vazquez Sr. who wouldn't rank in the top 5 of most divisions all time. And let's not forget Zaragoza who was a very good fighter as well, but wouldn't crack the top 5 in most divisions.

So we're simply looking at a relatively weak division historically at 122 pounds. So sure Gomez is the GOAT at 122, but he doesn't face relatively stiff competition for that honor.

I do actually think Gomez is a better fighter than Sanchez btw. But I think it's unfair to say Sanchez was too big and that's why he won.

Sanchez was a terrific fighter and ab ATG himself and maybe, just maybe, he would have always held a stylistic edge over Boom Boom.

H2H I would favor Pacquiao over MAB and Morales at 122. At 130 and 126 I would favor Morales H2H.

I think Pacquiao would outslug the one dimensional brawling version of Morales at 122. People forget that Morales didn't fully come into his own technically until he moved up to 126.

I think Barrera would be more competitive against Pacquiao at 122 than he was at 126, but would still lose.

First one that came to mind for me.

Duran vs. Henry Armstrong at 135 would be compelling as well. And SR Leonard vs. SR Robinson, or Hearns vs. Robinson.

I could do this all night.

luf I never wrote Sanchez was "too big". I wrote Wilfredo wasn't as effective at 126 as he was at 122, which is, quite frankly, obvious.

I completely agree with this post. Having written that, the fighters you mentioned keep Gomez in pretty good company at 122.

True Gomez is ATG and the best 122 pounder ever. But P4P I rate him below MAB, Morales and Pacquiao because when those three left 122 for higher divisions they went on to become greater than Gomez IMO.
