ErraticBehavior got me thinking about this in another thread.

We were discussing the Haggler vs. Hearns fight, which I have always thought is a little over-rated. Its a great fight, but I can think of several fights which I like more which were wars... yet it seems to be the ¨gold standard¨of boxing wars.

Is there a fight in boxing history, even a contemporary fight, which the general fan base loves but you think is over-rated?

Hagler Hearns is considered an epic fight because it was the most violence one could expect in six minutes. They were both bloody, with broken bones, in a very short amount of time. I get your question though, but I'll have to think about it.

Here's some other fights I consider overrated:

Evander Holyfield-MIke Tyson 1: pretty good fight with a lot of clinching. Somehow it won Fight of the Year. It wasn't even a top 5 fight of 1996 IMO.

The Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward trilogy: Great first fight, but the 2nd and 3rd fights were overrated and pretty one-sided. The 3rd fight was good, but not that good, and Toney-Jirov was definitely more worthy of Fight of the Year for 2003.

Alexis Arguello-Alfredo Escalera I: I didn't think it was even that good. The rematch was excellent though.

Ike Quartey-Oscar De La Hoya: Somehow, people tend to remember only 2 rounds and think it was a very good fight, when in actuality, 10 of the 12 rounds were a damn posefest.

Lewis/Tyson, I remember the fight being so hyped up on tv and on the streets. At the time I was like 17 and that fight was all could think about for like a month before it actually happend.

The truth of the matter was Tyson fighting 14 years out of his prime against a near prime Lennox Lewis, the fight was a one sidded beat down that should of never become so important.

With all due respect, I think the original poster is asking about fights that the majority of people thought, and still think, were good. I'm not sure anyone would rank Lewis/Tyson as a good fight.

I didn't think that Toney vs Jirov was anything special. It was pretty repetitive, Jirov throwing a lot of shots and Toney countering, I prefer fights where both guys get tagged a lot.

I slowly deluded myself into thinking Tyson had a good chance at beating Lewis.

After 2 rounds, I snapped back from denial into reality.

I really don't think you people understand what the thread starter is asking.

    I would have to say
Hearns-Hagler not really a big fan of it.

I thought it was pretty good.

Round 1 was intense, with Ali throwing some nice right leads, and Foreman doing some work near the ropes. Then the next 3-4 rounds had Foreman trying to kill Ali's body on the ropes, and Ali countering well. Then Foreman's workrate went down in the last couple rounds before the end, but the finale was still dramatic and the combo was nice.
