Marlon Starling seemed to have settled into domestic level after he lost his world title challenge against Curry, and then he suffered losses against Pedro Vilella and Johnny Bumphus that kept him even further away from a world championship. The Breland win completely revitalized his career. Even as a titleholder he still suffered setbacks, like the Breland draw and Molinares no-contest, but that period was the most successful he ever had.

Dennis Andries looked pretty much done at the age of 33 after being badly beaten by Thomas Hearns for his light heavyweight title. Instead he joined the Kronk, learned some of the skills Hearns had used against him, and had two more reigns as champion.
