"Early" is relative to a person's preconceived notion of when he intended to retire before a game-changer made him rethink things and cut his career short, regardless of age.

Vitali retired Lewis. This is a well-established fact.

The people Calzaghe was apparently running from :

    Bernard Hopkins

Fought to a close SD, dropped in the first round but got up to win in an ugly fight with 43 year old Hopkins faking low blows to catch a breather. I can hardly watch that fight, why would I want to see a rematch?

    Kelly Pavlik

The great white hope, Beat Taylor twice who beat Hopkins twice . . . . easy fight right? ha no.

    Chad Dawson

Overhyped from day 1, decent fighter with good handspeed but lacks the mentality to keep it up for 12 rounds. Got beat by Pascal then goes down in weight and gets stopped by a feather fisted Ward.

Calzaghe was 38 when he retired, had held the WBO for 10 years, captured the IBF, WBC, WBA and ring titles (168 and 175). Perfect time to retire dont you agree?

After MAB, prince had one last fight against a random bum just so he could go with a victory, but his decission to call it quits was obviously taken after Barrera clowned him. Barrera took Hamed's soul for good

Vitali was scared into retirement by career treatening injuries, not by C level Rahman

    Yeah. Let's not go there.

Floyd. Margarito scared him into retirement in 2008. Floyd came back a week after Mosley stopped Margo.

Calzaghe was contemplating retirement as early as 2007. In October 2007 before he fought Mikkel Kessler he told the BBC that he planned to have one more year in boxing before walking away. The link here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/7064179.stm and quotes from the article:

He told BBC One's Inside Sport: "I realise the end is near. I'm not going to be an Evander Holyfield and fight at 44, getting my head punched in.

"I'm giving myself a 12-month span to keep at the top and then I'll let it go. There'll be no comebacks."

"I realise I'm getting to that point in my career where you're not going to improve and you slowly decline, that's nature," he said.

So trying to claim he was "scared" into it ignores his flirtation with retirment two years before. And as Sugar Ray Leonard said, if his head and heart wasn't in it anymore then it doesn't matter who was available as a potential opponent, walking away was the right decision.

SRL bugged out of the Hagler showdown in 82, the eye had **** all to do with it. Then he could'nt flee the sport fast enough after journyman Kevin Howard dumped him on his arse in 84. Don Curry awaited him then & so did Hagler.

    Yes.A bit like..erm..

    I give in.Vitali in 2005?:think

Lopez gets the blame all the time, yet he hadn't fought at the weight when those two were fighting. Why didn't they make the fights happen if it was so easy? There was a lot more going on with sanctioning bodies than people care to remember.
Lopez knew he was losing his sting at 108 which is a big part of why he retired IMO,but he would still have had enough to beat Carbajal and Gonzales(and I'm a fan of both)
Bottom line is that Lopez did far more in his natural weight class than they did in theirs.
In those weight divisions, being at your natural and most effective weight is essential. If it was that easy why didn't Gonzales and Carbajal go down?

And I don't usually play the pyramid game, but if I had the inclination I could go and look up the proper spelling of the guy(Surjatoorong?) who beat Gonazales, who beat Carbajal etc..

There are at least two guys who have no place on that list.

The honest answer here would be Sugar Ray Leonard.

Not that I blame him, but a detached retina isn't a laughing matter.
