You mean a drunk problematic pavlik who in the grand scheme of things was half the fighter Carl was yep another dragged up mw type defence like ashira
Then pass it of as something does got to love Joe

Carl should have dragged strum up I'm sure bailey would give him props for that lol

And I'm sure he was offered career high pay for the froch fight

Pavlik was beaten by Hopkins before that fight happened and alledgedly had been offered previously. Carl was a British title holder at that time and Calzaghe was a LHW.
Its like you saying Froch wouldnt fight Golovkin or Degale because he at the end of his career just took on a British champ in his last 2 fights, but I expect Froch would have

I understand that. But what I'm saying, is that in my honest opinion, even if Carl had been more popular at that time with a better resume, it wouldn't have made any difference. Because Joe's motivation had gone. He'd told Enzo he'd had enough and he only wanted 1-2 more fights. He wasn't in the mindset to be wanting to face hungry fighters like Carl and Pavlik. So I don't agree with where you've said "There's no way he wouldn't have fought Carl..." (if Carl had beaten Kessler and Bute in or around 2007/2008)

    Ha!

I think Joe would have given Kelly an absolute hiding. Even Frank W told him to pursue Kelly instead of Roy.

Look @ the vacant wbc title look who is in challenger position
Look who dropped that belt and moved in to Carl's p!ace at 168 up at 175 without fighting
Lol and supposedly Carl was not ready lol
But Carl should have dragged pavlick up I'm sure bailey would be no screaming this made Carl

Pavlik wanted to fight Joe before he himself fought Hopkins, and before Joe fought Roy.

We both know that Joe's comments regarding Kelly didn't make any sense. In 2008, he said he wasn't interested in Kelly, because he didn't rate him and in his opinion, he hadn't done anything to warrant a fight. Yet he then admitted that he tried to fight him straight after Lacy in 2006. So that was bizarre.

Calzaghe was on his way to retirement. He'd told the BBC in the lead up to the Kessler fight that he only had one more year in the sport before he was going to walk away. Froch brought nothing to the table in 2008 that made him a more attractive opponent than Hopkins or Jones.

He didn't have their name value, he wasn't rated anywhere near as highly as Hopkins, he wasn't bringing a belt to the table and he couldn't hope to bring in anywhere near the amount of money that Hopkins or Jones could.

Retrospectively it would have been great for Calzaghe to have fought and beat him because Froch went on to become one of the divisions best fighters, but he just wasn't a worthwile fight for Calzaghe at the time for reputation, legacy, money or accomplishments.

Yeah, it was just too late in Calzaghe's career whatever Froch did. Calzaghe had no intention of fighting on beyond 2008 and nothing Froch did or said around that time would have got Calzaghe to agree to fight him.

Where was Pavliks interest? Calzaghes team allegedly offered pavlik a shot previously

    This is a great post.

    A hypothetical question:

If Carl had been a much bigger name, with a better resume, with a title at SMW, would Joe have considered him over Roy?

I dont think Calzaghe would have dropped back from LHW as SMW was tough for him.
I recall Froch saying something about wanting to win a title before facing Calzaghe so he had something to bring to the table

Kelly spoke of wanting to fight Joe early in 2008.

    You've seen the articles.

Why did Joe want to fight Kelly in 2006 when he was an unknown NABF champ, but not in 2008 when the fight would have been relevant?

    It doesn't make any sense.

I dont know if that is correct or not. What I do recall is that at that time Calzaghe was a SMW champ and Pavlik was often fighting at SMW at that time whereas in 08, Calzaghe was a LHW and Pavlik a MW and still not the name of Jones Jnr who at that time was something like #6 LHW
